~ the last words ~
loopring was crypto-native infrastructure and i was not on that side of the industry. really though, i knew about zero-knowledge rollups as a general engineering technique (the compression math is genuinely interesting) but the layer-2 dex user experience was something i read about rather than something i traded on. by the time loopring's dex was in production in december 2019 i was in the middle of transitioning between projects and had no reason to open a wallet against a china-founded ethereum protocol most people had not heard of.
the founder daniel wang had a legit software-engineering background, peking university undergrad then a masters at central florida, then a stretch at google and jd.com in shanghai before starting loopring. the pitch in the 2017 ico documents was that the ethereum base layer would never be able to run a low-latency high-volume exchange because of gas costs and block times. loopring would solve that off-chain by batching trades into zero-knowledge proofs and settling the compressed batches back on ethereum.
the ico landed in august 2017, raised about $45 million in ether. two weeks later the people's bank of china banned icos altogether and loopring returned most of the funds. the team kept going with a smaller runway and shipped the loopring protocol version 3 on ethereum mainnet in december 2019. that was the moment loopring became the first zk-rollup dex actually in production on ethereum, before starkex, before zksync, before any of the layer-2 rollups that would dominate the 2022-2026 scaling conversation.
by november 2021 loopring's total value locked was about $760 million and the lrc token was at $3.75 (a market cap in the low billions). that was the peak. between november 2021 and june 2026 the number came down almost every month.
~ the record ~
| Born | August 2017 ICO raise of about $45 million in ether; protocol live on ethereum mainnet December 2019 |
|---|---|
| Peak | about $760 million total value locked in November 2021 across the loopring dex and amm |
| Killed | 28 June 2026 (relayer offline; team-managed payout of remaining L2 balances instead of the trustless self-exit) |
| Lifespan | about nine years from ICO, about six and a half years from mainnet |
| Made by | Daniel Wang and the Loopring Foundation team out of shanghai |
| Killed by | no virtual machine, no composability, zkEVM competitors leaving loopring's non-composable design behind |
~ the fall ~
the specific engineering problem loopring had was that its zk-rollup was purpose-built for order-matching and swaps. it did not run a general-purpose virtual machine. once uniswap-style automated market makers became the whole game on ethereum and once zksync and starknet and polygon zkevm shipped general-purpose zk-execution environments in 2023-2024, loopring's design was locked into a shape that could not host the composable defi stack people wanted to build on. new protocols were not deploying onto loopring because they could not.
the token collapse mirrored the tvl. by 2024 lrc was under twenty cents. by 2026 the token was about $0.01 and the tvl was about $8 million. really though, the wallet service (a smart-contract wallet built on the protocol) shut in july 2025 with a bulk-migration tool for its users. the dex itself hung on for another year with a skeleton crew until the relayer went offline on 28 june 2026.
~ how it actually ended ~
loopring did something on the way out that i want to note. the trustless self-exit design that made zk-rollups the trust-minimized scaling technique they are, users can always withdraw their funds directly from the layer-1 contract without needing the operator, had been a feature of the loopring protocol from day one. on shutdown the team announced they were bypassing the self-exit and managing the payout themselves, converting amm positions to their underlying tokens and sending each user's balance to their ethereum address. only balances of at least $10 qualified.
the mechanical reason was gas-cost efficiency. batch withdrawals through the team-managed route were cheaper for users than a couple of hundred thousand individual self-exit transactions each paying its own base-layer gas. the philosophical cost was that the trust-minimized exit, the whole point of a zk-rollup as opposed to a trusted sidechain, got waived at the moment it mattered most. loopring paid the base-layer gas for the batched payouts. the community discord split evenly between users grateful the team was handling it and users pointing out that the exit path was supposed to be trustless precisely so that this could not happen.
~ what got buried with it ~
loopring's legacy is that it shipped a working zk-rollup on ethereum in production about two years before anyone else did, and demonstrated the compression math worked at real scale before the market was ready to trade on it. every zkevm project that shipped in 2023-2024 was working from a design space loopring had partly mapped out. what buried loopring was that the design space kept moving. non-composable order-matching rollups turned out to be a dead branch of the zk tree once the general-purpose zkevms shipped.
the lrc token still trades on a few exchanges at around $0.01 as an artifact of the ico era. the loopring foundation dissolved into a small maintenance-only team. by mid-2026 the loopring name is mostly a footnote in the ethereum scaling story alongside the other early zk experiments (starkware's dydx v3, immutable x's early build) that got run past by the general-purpose zkevms.
