Terra / Luna

2019 - 2022

terra was a south korean blockchain project whose stablecoin ust was kept at a dollar by burning and minting its sister token luna. the design worked while people kept depositing into the anchor protocol at a 19.5% yield. on may 7 2022 a few large addresses pulled their ust out, the peg slipped, the burn-and-mint mechanism started printing luna faster than the market could absorb it, and inside six days luna went from $87 to roughly $0.00005. do kwon was eventually arrested in montenegro and sentenced to fifteen years in a manhattan courtroom in december 2025.

the may 2022 luna chart is one of the cleanest cliffs in modern financial history. on may 5 luna traded at about $87. eight days later it traded at $0.00005. between those two points the terra ecosystem lost roughly $40 billion of market value while every crypto twitter timeline watched the candles in real time.

terra was a south korean project. do kwon and daniel shin founded terraform labs in 2018 and the blockchain mainnet shipped april 24 2019. the marquee product was ust, an algorithmic stablecoin kept at $1 not by holding dollars in a bank account the way tether claimed to, but by an arbitrage loop with its sister token luna. if ust traded under a dollar, the protocol let you burn it for $1 of newly minted luna. if it traded over, you went the other way. on a whiteboard this is elegant. in a panic it is a slow-motion bonfire.

the actual demand for ust was largely synthetic. it came from anchor protocol, a defi savings product that paid roughly 19.5% yield on ust deposits. anchor's payout exceeded what its borrowers paid, and the gap was filled from a reserve that luna foundation guard kept topping up. by spring 2022 daily subsidies into anchor were running around $6 million. on may 1 the community voted to slowly cut the yield. on may 7 two large addresses pulled 375 million ust out. the peg cracked while luna foundation guard spent its bitcoin reserves trying to defend it. the mint mechanism printed luna at industrial scale and the cliff happened.

~ the origin ~

terra was korean tech royalty before it was a crypto story. daniel shin had already built ticket monster into a unicorn. do kwon was a stanford computer science graduate who had worked briefly at microsoft. when terraform labs started taking outside money in 2018 the round included galaxy digital and coinbase ventures. by 2021 luna foundation guard had a billion-dollar bitcoin reserve and a celebrity board roster.

the user-facing pitch was that ust was the first decentralized stablecoin that actually scaled. tether and usdc held bank deposits and treasuries. ust did not need any of that. the part nobody wanted to look at closely was that ust's $18 billion supply at peak was being held up by a 19.5% yield product whose math required an ever-larger reserve to keep paying out.

~ the day it died ~

may 9 2022 is when ust lost its peg for the second and final time, dropping into the high nineties of a cent and refusing to come back. on may 10 luna foundation guard sold most of its bitcoin reserves into the market trying to buy ust back to $1. it did not hold. on may 11 the team announced a community proposal to burn ust faster, which the market read as a death certificate. by may 13 luna's per-token price was a rounding error against zero and the blockchain itself was halted to prevent governance attacks.

retail damage was severe. there were public suicide hotlines posted on the terra subreddit. a class action got filed in singapore. south korean prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for do kwon in september 2022. he was caught in montenegro in march 2023 traveling on falsified documents and extradited to the us in december 2024. he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in august 2025 and got fifteen years from judge paul engelmayer on december 11 2025.

~ what got buried with it ~

terra was the first domino of the 2022 crypto winter. three arrows capital had been a heavy holder of luna and bitcoin staked into anchor. their collapse in june triggered the celsius and voyager freezes the same month. ftx's slow-motion insolvency through the autumn was downstream of the same cascade. by november 2022 the crypto industry had lost roughly $2 trillion in market cap and a chain of household-name founders were facing criminal charges.

for me terra was a chart-watching experience from ankara. i was 38, doing edge-ai computer-vision work, not on crypto twitter and not holding ust. but the chart got circulated everywhere because there has rarely been a clearer demonstration that a financial design can be internally consistent on paper and still detonate in a week. the bitcoin reserve that luna foundation guard kept getting praised for in 2021 turned out to be the fuel they would burn on the way down.
