Bitconnect

2016 - 2018
dead
bitconnect promised a "trading bot" that paid one percent compounded daily, which is mathematically a ponzi. for about eighteen months in 2016 and 2017 millions of people sent in real bitcoin and got bcc tokens back. when texas and north carolina issued cease-and-desist orders in january 2018 the price went from $463 to under $30 inside a week. carlos matos's "wassuuuup bitconneeect" speech is still the most-watched video of any 2017 crypto event.

~ the obit ~

the first time i heard the name bitconnect was through the carlos matos clip. that is probably true for ninety percent of people who heard the name at all. october 2017, thailand, an annual ceremony bitconnect held for its biggest promoters, and a guy in a leather jacket on stage screaming the brand name with both arms in the air. by january 2018 the clip was on every crypto-skeptic timeline and bitconnect itself was dissolving.

the product was a lending platform. you sent the company bitcoin and the company "lent" it via a proprietary trading bot at one percent daily compounded. one percent daily compounded turns into roughly 3,778 percent annualized, which is the part where any working economist closes the tab. it ran for almost two years anyway, peaking at a $2.6 billion market cap and a $463 token price in december 2017.

satish kumbhani, an indian founder operating largely outside the reach of us regulators, ran it. the volume came from a global mlm structure where existing investors got referral commissions for bringing in new investors. that is the actual definition of a ponzi, and that is what the sec eventually called it in the september 2021 lawsuit.

~ the rise ~

the 2017 ico bubble was the wider context. ethereum smart contracts had made it trivially cheap to launch a coin, and the broader crypto-youtube ecosystem had already trained an audience to buy them. into that environment bitconnect's affiliate program could not have landed harder. the front page of the affiliate dashboard openly showed investors what their downstream commissions would look like, and the platform built a global network of regional promoters around it.

carlos matos was one of those promoters and the loudest one at the october 2017 thailand event. his speech, intentionally or not, doubled as performance art for what affiliate culture inside the platform actually looked like from the inside. the youtube clip got extracted from the bitconnect livestream by skeptics and mirrored everywhere within three weeks.

~ the postmortem ~

the texas state securities board issued a cease-and-desist on january 4 2018, and north carolina followed nine days later. bitconnect announced on january 16 that it was closing the lending and exchange platform, citing "bad press and continuous cease-and-desist orders" as the reason. the bcc token went from $463 to about $20 inside a week. people who had been compounding for months watched the dashboard zero out.

kumbhani was indicted by the us doj in february 2022 on fraud and money-laundering charges. he is believed to be in india. as of 2026 there has been no public extradition. promoter glenn arcaro pleaded guilty in september 2021 and got 38 months. the rest of the regional promoter network mostly moved on to the next crypto cycle.

~ the long tail ~

carlos matos's clip is a permanent piece of internet folklore now. matos himself did a 2019 interview saying he lost everything on bitconnect like everybody else, which is part of why the clip aged into something other than pure schadenfreude. it sits on the same shelf as the dot-com beanie babies and the dutch tulip bulbs.

bitconnect is also why the next round of crypto regulation in the us actually got written. for a long time the official position was that crypto was too marginal to deserve sec attention. one percent daily compounded turning into a $2.6 billion balance sheet changed that position by inches, and bitconnect was where the inches started.
