~ the goodbye ~
A joint venture called Super Channel started distributing over CS satellite in August 1989 and reached Japanese cable systems a month later. It became a company proper in December 1995, merged with another firm in October 1998 and came out the other side as Super Network Inc. In July 2006 the channel renamed itself Super! drama TV, and a year after that it took the katakana form of the same name that it kept for the rest of its life.
What it did for thirty six years was import foreign drama into Japanese homes and dub it. Not a niche within that, not a genre slice: the whole category, which in the Super Channel years meant a great deal of twentieth-century television being run and rerun. After the 2006 rename the schedule flipped toward new and nearly-new shows, and for about a decade the channel was where a Japanese viewer first saw Supernatural, Heroes, Breaking Bad, The Big Bang Theory and The Blacklist.
It liked long series and it avoided the ones that got canceled early at home, which is a scheduling philosophy with real consequences. Dallas ran daily from 1999. ER started in 2004, the Law & Order franchise from 2011, NCIS through the 2020s. A run of Venezuelan telenovelas started in 1997, which is not where anyone expects a Japanese pay channel to have gone.
By March 2024 about 57 percent of the households that could receive it were doing so over cable, with the remainder split between satellite and IPTV. J:COM, the largest cable operator in the country, had already dropped the channel on 30 September 2023 for scheduling reasons. The closure notice went up on the channel's own site on 19 March 2026, citing circumstances around the business environment and nothing more specific. Broadcast ended at midnight on 30 June 2026. The customer center answered calls for another month and closed at eight in the evening on 31 July.

~ the star trek years ~
From the 1989 launch until the 2006 rename, Star Trek was the thing this channel was for. It ran the series continuously across the whole Super Channel era, through the 1997 move onto PerfecTV and the DirecTV Japan carriage that followed that December, and around the turn of the century the channel made a summer festival of it: twenty four hours of Star Trek programming, once a year, as an event.
After the rename the proportion dropped. The strategy had moved to first-run American hits and Star Trek became one show among many rather than the reason the channel existed. Anyone in Japan who followed the franchise through the nineties followed it here.
~ how it lost ~
Around 2015 the competition for foreign drama rights in Japan stopped being a contest between broadcasters. Netflix and its neighbors arrived with budgets no satellite channel could answer, and the effect on Super! drama TV is legible in its own schedule. Exclusives and first-run windows both thinned out. The lineup filled with European productions rather than American and British ones, ad breaks got longer, and shows other channels had already aired started turning up in the schedule.
By the 2020s it had circled back to being a rerun channel, which is what it had been in 1989 before the rename set out to change that. In 2024 it started carrying Chinese dramas and in 2025 Indian ones, having never aired a Korean drama at all before 2023.
~ the spin-off that went first ~
In March 2017 the channel launched Super! Drama Classic, a subscription streaming service for material that had never made it onto disc in Japan. It carried members-only interview and commentary content alongside the shows, added Fire TV support in March 2018, and shut down in February 2019 after less than two years. The channel that made it outlived it by seven.
~ the day it ended ~
The slot did not go dark. Channel CS310 on SKY PerfecTV came back on 1 July 2026 under the name V Paradise, which is the ordinary end of a broadcast license: the frequency is worth more than the brand attached to it, so the brand goes and the frequency stays.
None of this reached me. Japanese pay television was never something I could have watched from Turkey, and the shows it built its later years on were the ones everyone everywhere was watching anyway, through entirely different pipes. What was local was the dubbing and the 1997 decision to buy Venezuelan telenovelas, and nothing that came after the channel is going to carry either of those forward.
