~ the eulogy ~
celsius advertised 17% yields on dollars and bitcoin. that was the whole pitch, written across every podcast ad and every "ama with alex" livestream from 2018 onward. the unstated other half of the pitch was that celsius would do something with the deposits that produced more than 17% in revenue so the company could keep the spread. for a stretch in 2020 and 2021 that something was working. crypto prices were climbing, defi protocols were paying double-digit yields on stablecoins, and large institutional borrowers were willing to pay celsius for short-term bitcoin loans.
alex mashinsky was the founder and full-time public face. ukrainian-born and israeli-raised, an early voice-over-ip entrepreneur who had run several telecom companies before crypto. on every weekly youtube ama he wore a celsius t-shirt and used the phrase "unbank yourself" until it became a community tagline. by 2021 celsius had roughly 1.7 million depositors and around $25 billion in assets under management. mashinsky was a fixture on the bitcoin podcast circuit alongside michael saylor and anthony pompliano.
the trouble was the spread. by spring 2022 defi yields had dropped, institutional borrow demand was thinning, and celsius had quietly moved a meaningful chunk of customer deposits into less liquid positions. the june 2022 three arrows capital collapse triggered margin calls everywhere in the crypto credit market. celsius froze withdrawals on june 12, claiming temporary "market conditions." inside the company, the hole was already too big to fill.

~ the origin ~
celsius launched in june 2017 in hoboken, new jersey, after a $50 million initial coin offering for its native cel token. the cel token gave you a yield bonus if you held it, which was an old casino mechanic dressed in defi language. through 2018 and 2019 the product grew slowly. the breakout was 2020 when bitcoin's run from $5,000 to $30,000 made the yields look defensible and the company's marketing budget scaled with deposits.
mashinsky kept selling a particular narrative on the weekly amas. banks were dishonest and defi yields were the fairer deal for retail, with celsius as the friendly intermediary that handled the complexity for you. he also kept making specific claims about how celsius generated its yields, claims that the sdny indictment would later quote back to him as the basis for fraud counts.
~ the day it died ~
june 7 2022 was the last ama before the freeze. mashinsky on stream said celsius had "the best risk management team in the industry" while three arrows capital was already imploding behind the scenes. june 12 the withdrawal pause hit. the post on the celsius blog framed it as a temporary safeguard. nobody who had been around for mt. gox or quadrigacx read it that way.
chapter 11 was filed july 13 2022. the declaration the next day showed a $1.2 billion deficit. of $5.5 billion in liabilities, $4.7 billion was owed to users listed as unsecured creditors. depositors who had treated celsius as a savings account learned that crypto custodied at a centralized lender is legally indistinguishable from a loan to that lender. when the lender goes bankrupt, you stand in line behind the secured creditors.
~ what got buried with it ~
mashinsky resigned september 27 2022. he was arrested in new york on july 13 2023, exactly one year after the bankruptcy filing. he pleaded guilty to two fraud counts on december 3 2024 and was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison on may 8 2025. the bankruptcy itself produced a complicated multi-year reorganization. customers eventually got something like 60 cents on the dollar in a mixture of bitcoin and equity in a successor company called ionic digital. the cel token went to roughly zero.
terra had collapsed in may 2022 and three arrows capital followed in june. celsius froze in june and filed in july alongside voyager, with ftx limping through the autumn before its own implosion in november. the post-2022 crypto winter is one continuous cascade, and celsius is the entry where the failure mode is most clearly "we offered a yield we could not actually generate" rather than the more sophisticated failures upstream.
