Voyager Digital

2018 - 2023
dead us
voyager digital was a us crypto brokerage. customers deposited fiat or crypto, the app gave per-coin quotes with no visible commission, and the platform paid up to 12% apy on certain assets. that yield was financed by lending customer deposits to institutional crypto traders. three arrows capital defaulted in june 2022 owing voyager roughly $650 million. voyager froze withdrawals on july 1 2022 and filed chapter 11 four days later.

voyager digital ran tv ads during NBA games. that is the single fact that tells you where voyager sat in the world. it was a US retail-investor product with a dallas mavericks partnership and a mark cuban endorsement. the app required a US bank account and a US ssn. anybody outside that perimeter watched voyager from the outside through coindesk and the financial press, and tried to keep their crypto on a hardware wallet instead of in a yield account they could not legally use.

voyager digital was founded in 2018 by stephen ehrlich, who had previously run an electronic-trading desk at lightspeed financial. the model was a hybrid of a brokerage and a savings account. customers deposited fiat or crypto and got a clean per-coin quote with no visible commission. behind the scenes, a portion of customer holdings was lent to institutional crypto borrowers for interest. voyager paid customers up to 12% apy on certain assets. the spread between what voyager earned lending out and what it paid depositors was the revenue. the company listed on the toronto stock exchange and reached a peak market cap above $3 billion in late 2021. by mid-2022 it had about 3.5 million users.

three arrows capital killed voyager. three arrows was a singapore-based crypto hedge fund that had borrowed roughly $650 million from voyager in 15,250 bitcoin plus 350 million usdc. when three arrows defaulted in june 2022, voyager's loan book lost about a third of its assets overnight. all platform operations were suspended on july 1 2022. nothing moved in or out of the platform after that. chapter 11 followed four days later, filed in the southern district of new york on july 5 2022.

~ what it was ~

voyager looked like a fintech app rather than a crypto exchange. the user interface had no order book. trades happened against voyager's smart order router, which advertised "best execution" by hitting multiple back-end exchanges for the customer's quote. the deposit-yield feature, marketed as "interest accounts," paid 5 to 12 percent apy depending on the asset, with no minimum balance and weekly compounding. compared to coinbase, which paid almost nothing on idle balances at the time, that was the entire pitch.

the FDIC issue is the part of the story that mattered most after the bankruptcy. voyager held customer fiat in an omnibus account at metropolitan commercial bank in new york. that bank was FDIC-insured. voyager interpreted this in its marketing to mean that voyager customer deposits were FDIC-insured, which was not the legal position the FDIC took. the FDIC issued a cease-and-desist letter to voyager during the bankruptcy. the FTC later sued voyager in october 2023 for the false-insurance claim, and stephen ehrlich personally settled with the cftc for a $1.5 million civil penalty.

~ the long tail ~

voyager's bankruptcy moved through chapter 11 in fits and starts. binance.us announced a $1.022 billion deal to acquire voyager's assets in december 2022, which would have made customers roughly whole. that deal collapsed in april 2023 after SEC objections and binance.us's own regulatory deterioration. the bankruptcy then pivoted to a liquidation plan, with customers receiving initial distributions in mid-2023 amounting to around 35 percent of their account values. the wind-down completed across 2024. by mid-2024 voyager was an addressless brand attached to a court-administered claims process, and stephen ehrlich was no longer permitted to operate in commodity futures markets in the US.
