Submarino

1999 - 2024
dead brazil
submarino started in 1999 on top of booknet, an online bookstore jack london had opened in brazil in 1995, and it became the first brazilian e-commerce name with real mass recall. it passed a million customers by 2003 and listed on the bovespa in march 2005, then merged with americanas.com in 2006 to form b2w. it survived the dot-com bust and then amazon arriving in brazil. what it did not survive was january 2023, when its own parent turned out to have billions of reais of invented accounting, and in july 2024 americanas folded the site into its own and switched the name off.

~ the eulogy ~

I have never bought anything in Brazil and Submarino was never going to be a site I used. What is familiar is the shape of it. Turkey ran almost exactly the same play on almost the same schedule, a local e-commerce name founded around the turn of the century that outlasted the bust and was eventually swallowed by something larger that wanted the traffic more than the brand. GittiGidiyor is already on this site for that reason.

Underneath Submarino there was a bookstore. Jack London opened Booknet in 1995, one of the first serious online bookshops in Brazil, and sold it in 1999 to a group backed by GP Investimentos who renamed the whole thing Submarino and pointed it at everything rather than at books. The name was good and the timing was better, because Brazilian households were arriving online in volume right at that moment.

It grew fast enough to look implausible. By 2003 it had more than a million customers and revenue around 211 million reais, which in a country where most people did not have a credit card was a genuinely difficult thing to have built. It listed on the Bovespa in March 2005, one of the first Brazilian internet companies to make it to a public market, and for a while it was the answer to what Brazil had instead of Amazon.

In 2006 Submarino merged with Americanas.com, the online arm of the department store chain, and the result was B2W Digital. That is the moment the brand stopped being a company and became an asset inside one, which is also the moment its ending was decided, although it took another eighteen years to arrive.

~ three storefronts, one warehouse ~

What B2W ran after 2006 was one logistics operation wearing several names. Submarino kept the technology and entertainment customer while Americanas kept the general household one. Shoptime, which had arrived from television shopping, carried an older audience that neither of the others could reach. Same warehouses underneath, different front doors.

Keeping them apart for that long was a bet that the names were worth more than the savings from merging them, and for most of two decades that bet was correct. Brazilians typed submarino.com.br from memory. You cannot buy that, and it is the only thing a retailer owns that a competitor cannot simply undercut.

~ the january that broke it ~

In January 2023 Americanas disclosed accounting inconsistencies in the tens of billions of reais, and the number kept getting worse as auditors worked through it. The company went into judicial recovery with debts north of 40 billion reais, one of the largest corporate collapses in Brazilian history, and none of it had anything to do with whether Submarino was any good at selling things.

~ what really happened ~

The restructuring that followed did the obvious arithmetic. In July 2024 Americanas announced that the Submarino and Shoptime sites and apps would be folded into its own, with the inventory absorbed and the brands retired. Old purchase history stayed reachable until 15 January 2025 and then that went too. There was no farewell page and no anniversary, just a redirect.

~ what got buried with it ~

Brazil's first internet generation is thin on the ground now, and rip.so already holds Lokau and Zaz from the same few years. Submarino was the one that made it out of that cohort and onto a public market, and it survived every foreign competitor sent at it. Then it died because the people who owned it had been writing down numbers that were not true.

Twenty-five years is a long life for a dot-com. It is also long enough that a whole country learned to type a URL without thinking, which is the thing that actually disappeared in July 2024.
