~ the eulogy ~
i missed botanix at every stage. the testnet launch in november 2023, the mainnet in 2024, the polychain-led $11.5 million raise in may 2024, the chainlink and okx integrations through 2025. bitcoin-native defi was a category i knew existed as a research question and did not follow as a market. the spiderchain design was interesting enough on paper (a rotating orchestrator federation holding btc reserves instead of a single bridge custodian) that i read one blog post about it in the coindesk consensus interview and then closed the tab.
willem schroé, the founder, has an engineering degree and a harvard mba and was a national mathematics medalist in belgium as a student. the spiderchain thesis came out of his mba work, an attempt to build a decentralized peg between bitcoin and an evm-compatible execution layer without introducing a token that could be pumped and dumped. botanix labs was founded in june 2022 and spent about eighteen months in stealth before the testnet went up on 29 november 2023.
the technical case for a bitcoin l2 in this period was that bitcoin holders had large idle balances, ethereum defi had proven the demand for lending and swaps, and nobody had bridged the two safely. the mainnet went live in mid-2024 and by mid-2026 had processed about 25 million transactions. chainlink oracles came online, okx integrated the network for withdrawals, decentralized exchanges deployed. on the engineering scoreboard botanix was doing well.
~ the dossier ~
| Born | June 2022 as botanix labs (testnet 29 November 2023, mainnet 2024) |
|---|---|
| Peak | about 25 million organic transactions and the $11.5 million polychain-led raise |
| Killed | 9 July 2026 (hard sweep deadline; assets not withdrawn permanently lost) |
| Lifespan | about four years from company founding, about two years live on mainnet |
| Made by | Willem Schroé and botanix labs |
| Killed by | tokenless economics, bitcoin holders using the network as a quiet store of value rather than for high-frequency transactions |
~ the economic problem ~
the tokenless design was the point and also the trap. fees on botanix were paid in btc, not in a separate botanix token that could be inflated to subsidize the security budget. every other credible ethereum l2 in the same window (optimism and arbitrum among the earlier ones, base and linea among the newer) had a native token and could effectively print security funding out of token grants to sequencers and provers. botanix could not. the orchestrator federation had to be paid in btc from the fees users actually generated.
the users generated very little fee revenue. the pattern the team described in the wind-down post was that btc holders parked their bitcoin on botanix to earn yield, then rarely transacted. bitcoin as a store of value moves once. defi as a use case wants high-frequency transactions. the spiderchain design assumed both would compound and it turned out only the first one did. the network was cheaper to bridge into than to keep running.
~ the actual end ~
the shutdown announcement came in june 2026 with a formal wind-down timeline. july 1 as the first target withdrawal date, a two-week grace period through july 15, and a hard sweep deadline set for 9 july 2026 after which the federation would move remaining balances to a treasury address permanently. the phrasing in the announcement was that botanix labs had spent nearly four years building the network and could not find a fee-paying user base that would sustain it.
the technical write-ups in the crypto press treated the shutdown as a data point about bitcoin l2 economics in general. the spiderchain worked. the federation model held. no bridge exploit, no oracle failure, no team departure. the network died from lack of transaction demand, which is a different failure mode than the exploits and depegs that killed most defi projects. what got buried was the tokenless-l2 category as a viable business model for anything more expensive than a single-signer sidechain.
