Xbox 360 Marketplace

2005 - 2024
dead
xbox 360 marketplace was microsoft's on-console store, launched with the 360 itself on 22 november 2005 with a starting catalog of 400 items. it hosted xbox live arcade indies, downloadable dlc, avatar clothing, gamerpics, movie rentals, kinect experiments, and the entire microsoft points economy at its peak. rebranded as xbox games store in august 2013, replaced on newer consoles by the microsoft store in october 2017, the 360 storefront kept running as a legacy shelf for another seven years. microsoft announced closure on 17 august 2023 and pulled purchasing on 29 july 2024. previously bought titles still redownload on 360 and via backward compatibility on xbox one and series consoles. forty-seven games with no physical release and no port had nowhere to go after that date.

~ the goodbye ~

i did not own an xbox 360. in the tr internet cafe stack of 2005-2010 the box was a pc running counter-strike 1.6 or steam, sometimes a networked lan tournament of warcraft 3, occasionally a playstation 2 on a spare crt in the back. consoles for adults came later here and even then it was mostly the playstation line. the xbox 360 arrived in turkey in 2007 through the distributor bilkom and the price sat above what most people i knew were willing to spend on hardware that only played games.

so the marketplace was a shelf i knew existed and mostly read about. it launched with the console on 22 november 2005 with about 400 items, small demos, arcade ports, gamerpics, dashboard themes. microsoft points came alongside it, a currency layer that priced everything in eighty-point increments so nobody could quite tell what a real dollar was going out. the arcade tier grew fast, geometry wars in 2005, castle crashers in 2008, braid in 2008, limbo in 2010, super meat boy in 2010. the whole xbox live arcade era was the shelf where indie broke through, before steam quietly won the same market.

the storefront was rebranded xbox games store on 30 august 2013 when the xbox one launched, and it was replaced on the newer console by the microsoft store on 22 october 2017. the 360 version kept running as a legacy shelf for another seven years, mostly to let owners buy dlc and re-download old purchases. on 17 august 2023 microsoft posted the notice. purchasing ends 29 july 2024. everything you already bought stays yours, playable on 360 and through backward compatibility on xbox one and series consoles.

~ the 47 orphans ~

the interesting part of the closure was the count that the delisted-games community published. of everything the 360 store carried, 47 games had no physical release and no digital home on any other platform. after 29 july 2024 they became unpurchasable anywhere. some of these were kinect experiments that only made sense with the sensor, fruit ninja kinect and the assorted kinect fitness titles. some were the xbox-exclusive south park arcade games. some were indies with expired publisher contracts nobody wanted to renew. double dragon II wander of the dragons, meteos wars, the dishwasher dead samurai, crimson alliance. the shortlist covered ten years of platform-exclusive small releases that had never earned a port.

this was the visible piece of a much longer pattern. digital storefronts have a half-life measured in the parent console's warranty window, and the further the console drifts from the shipping generation the more titles get orphaned as licensing paperwork expires. the nintendo 3ds and wii u eshop closed the same year window. the wii shop channel had already closed in 2019, and playstation mobile before that in 2015. the 360 shelf just outlived the pattern longer than most.

~ what stayed alive ~

microsoft kept backward compatibility going. the xbox one and series x/s can still buy backward-compatible 360 titles through the microsoft store on those consoles, so about six hundred of the more popular 360 games still have a live purchase path. it is the 47 titles with no compat pipeline and no ported version that became unavailable full stop. no clean way to buy them digitally, no physical release to hunt on ebay for the games that never got a disc.

~ what remains ~

the xbox live arcade shelf was the first mass-market place a lot of us watched indie games find real money. limbo sold over a million copies on that storefront within a year of release. braid and super meat boy sold well enough to become landmarks for the whole era. those numbers built the case that indie could be a viable pc-and-console business, which is the ground that steam later took over completely. the storefront that hosted the breakout closed almost two decades after those releases, by which point steam had won the whole category.
