barcelona, march 2017: line announced a cloud ai platform called clova at mobile world congress, built with naver, and promised japan a smart speaker of its own before google or amazon could ship one in japanese. the wave went on sale on 5 october 2017, one day before google home reached japan, at a price line had cut to meet it. five and a half years later the devices stopped being smart. sales ended on 31 october 2022 and the assistant was switched off on 30 march 2023, leaving a speaker that still played music over bluetooth if you had thought to pair it first.

LINE went to Mobile World Congress on 2 March 2017 with a cloud AI platform called Clova, developed jointly with its Korean parent NAVER. The pitch was that the messaging app nearly everyone in Japan already had open on their phone would also be the voice in a speaker on the shelf, and that it would answer in Japanese properly, which the American assistants of early 2017 did not.

The first device was the CLOVA WAVE, shown in June 2017 and offered that July as a function-limited early-access unit at 10,000 yen. It weighed just under a kilogram, ran a Qualcomm APQ8009, spoke Japanese and Korean, and did the things only a messaging company could do: it read your incoming LINE messages out loud and let you dictate replies, and it played LINE MUSIC's catalog of forty million tracks on request. It also had an infrared blaster, so it could drive the air conditioner.

The full retail launch was 5 October 2017 at 14,000 yen. Google Home went on sale in Japan the following day. Nikkei covered both in one article and noted that LINE had dropped the price to meet the moment, down from the 15,000 yen the company had quoted when the device was unveiled. On 14 December came CLOVA Friends, the same assistant inside a Brown or Sally shell from the LINE FRIENDS character line, at 8,640 yen and 378 grams, with the infrared control taken out to get there. A mini version followed at 258 grams. By the end of 2017 LINE had a speaker range on Japanese shelves and a head start measured in a single day.

Getting there first turned out to be worth very little. Japanese smart speaker penetration reached roughly 17.6 percent by 2021 on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' numbers, so the market did arrive. It simply arrived belonging to Amazon and Google, whose devices got cheaper every year and carried an ecosystem of third-party skills that a Japan-and-Korea assistant was never going to match.

LINE did build the developer surface. The CLOVA Extensions Kit let outside teams write skills, and it was the thing LINE pointed at when asked how Clova would keep up. It is also the first item listed as discontinued in the 2022 notice, which is an answer of sorts about how much of it existed by then.

Clova was always bigger than the speakers. Underneath the consumer product sat a business catalog: CLOVA Speech, CLOVA Voice, CLOVA OCR, CLOVA Chatbot, and LINE AiCall, which answered restaurant phones on behalf of the restaurant. Those were sold to companies, and they survived the consumer shutdown. The brand survives in Korea too, where NAVER still ships Clova under its own name and later built CLOVA X on top of it.

So the name on the box outlived the box. LINE kept the research and the enterprise contracts, and stopped selling anything to the public at all. CLOVA Note, a transcription app that stayed in beta its entire life, hung on until 31 July 2025 before being folded into LINE WORKS AiNote.

LINE posted the notice on 26 October 2022 on the official Clova blog, covering five products: WAVE, Desk, Friends, Friends mini and the Friends Dock. Hardware sales stopped five days later, on 31 October. Voice operation continued for another five months and ended on 30 March 2023. Sankei ran the announcement on the day it was made under a headline that said only this: LINE's smart speaker, sales ended after a little over five years.

The instruction buried in the notice is the part worth keeping. After the cutoff the hardware would still work as a plain Bluetooth speaker, but only if you had completed the Bluetooth pairing before the service went down, because the setup flow itself ran through Clova. Anyone who missed that window was left with a speaker that could no longer be connected to anything. Devices bought within the previous year from an authorized dealer could be refunded, through a form that opened on 3 April 2023 and closed on 30 June, with payments made in July. LINE had to keep a dead product's paperwork running for three months longer than the product.
