Google Assistant

2016 - 2026
dead
a billion devices had it installed and about five hundred million people used it every month. google announced in august 2026 that it would be discontinued on 4 september. what killed it was the technology that replaced it: the assistant ran on intent parsing and hand written actions, and the large language models that arrived after 2022 did the same job without any of that scaffolding. gemini took the wake word.

~ the obituary ~

The wake word was the product. You said OK Google out loud, in a room that might have other people in it, and a phone lying face down on the table answered you. In 2016 that was still odd enough that people did it as a demonstration rather than as a habit. Google announced the Assistant at I/O on 18 May 2016 and shipped it later that year inside a messaging app called Allo and a speaker called Google Home.

It grew in a way that voice products before it had not. By January 2020 Google said the Assistant was available on more than a billion devices, and the monthly user figure it gave was above five hundred million. It reached over ninety countries and more than thirty languages, Turkish among them, which mattered because speech recognition had spent years being a thing that only worked properly in English.

I had it because everyone with an Android phone had it, and that is the honest version. It set timers and it read out the weather, and the moment a question got more complicated than that you learned to stop asking. My own work sits near this, computer vision on small hardware rather than speech, and what was obvious from inside that world was how much machinery sat behind every query the Assistant could actually handle.

Google announced in August 2026 that the Assistant would be discontinued on 4 September, on Android phones and on Wear OS watches, with Gemini taking over the wake word. Cars with Google built in kept it for the moment. The shutdown was framed as an upgrade, and for anything involving language it genuinely was.

~ what it replaced ~

The Assistant replaced Google Now, which had been the older and stranger idea: a feed that tried to guess what you wanted before you asked for it. Now was ambient and it never waited. The Assistant was conversational and did nothing until spoken to, and the industry decided inside about eighteen months that the second shape was the right one. Amazon already had Alexa in the house. Apple already had Siri on the phone.

Allo, the messaging app it launched inside, was dead by 2019. Google Home became Google Nest. The Assistant outlived both of the products it originally shipped in.

~ the ten year middle ~

For most of the decade between launch and shutdown the Assistant did not change much. It gained languages and devices while its actual conversational range stayed roughly where it had been in 2017. Google demonstrated Duplex in 2018, the system that phoned restaurants and booked tables in a synthesized voice with hesitation sounds built into it, and that demo was the high water mark. Duplex never became general. The Assistant kept setting timers.

~ the wake word ~

The formal end came on 4 September 2026. Google had been retiring pieces of it for well over a year by then, saying in March 2025 that the Assistant would stop working on iOS and on newer Android releases, and the September date closed what was left.

Once the switch reached a device there was no way back to it. Google said so plainly in its own guidance. A wake word that a billion devices had been trained to listen for was reassigned to a different system in a rolling update that took a few weeks to finish.

~ epitaphs from visitors ~

"Towards the end of its lifespan it became nearly unusable; misinterpretations were so frequent I had to repeat nearly every phrase twice. It needed a refresh desperately, and the update to Gemini improved reliability..."
