Reader's Digest Canada

1947 - 2024

reader's digest canada was the canadian arm of the pocket-format monthly, running for 76 years across two editions. the french sélection launched in 1947, the english edition in 1948. by november 2023 the montreal office was laying off ten staff. on 6 december 2023 reader's digest magazines ltd told employees the whole slate of canadian titles would close by 31 march 2024, citing ad revenue declines and reader habit shifts. the final issue shipped on that date.

~ the obituary ~

reader's digest was a brand that reached turkey through the pocket-format itself. in those days the small compact magazine turned up in dentist waiting rooms and on aunts' bookshelves in ankara same as it did anywhere the postal system carried it. the canadian edition specifically was a different object. it was printed and edited for a canadian household, in two languages, out of a montreal operation that had been running since 1947.

that operation closed on 31 march 2024, or thereabouts. the announcement came on 6 december 2023, in a note to employees that reader's digest magazines ltd would end the canadian titles by the spring. by then the montreal office had already given layoff notices to about ten staff in november. the parent group cited the same set of pressures that had taken the uk edition earlier the same season. ad revenue erosion on one axis, and on the other a home-reader base that was not buying general-interest monthlies the way it had in the postwar decades. postage and paper costs were rising into that gap.

still, the canadian side of the digest was larger than most non-us localizations by circulation. peak numbers put it near 800,000 copies a month with a stated readership of about five million, and it was named the most influential magazine in canadian publishing history in 2008. either way, the shutdown closed off the french-language sélection at the same time. between the canada spring 2024 close and the uk close a month later, both of the long-running localized versions of the digest ended inside the same window. only the us edition, in reduced form under trusted media brands, kept limping.

~ the two editions ~

sélection came first, in 1947, aimed at french-speaking readers in quebec and beyond. the english reader's digest canada started a year later. through the 1950s and 60s both were straight canadian localizations of the us monthly, with a mix of condensed pieces from other magazines and books and the humor pages readers remembered by name. the canadian editorial work localized coverage where it mattered, mostly around health and public-service pieces that could not be run wholesale from a us insurance context.

~ what the parent kept trying ~

the montreal operation had spent the 2010s extending into sister titles. best health canada on the health-and-service side, along with our canada and more of our canada on the reader-submission side. all of those went into the same 31 march 2024 wind-down along with the flagship. it was a batch closure of the whole canadian publishing group under trusted media brands. sister sites and mailings ended together. the readersdigest.ca site went dormant in the same window, redirecting where it could to the surviving us properties.

~ the closure note ~

the 6 december 2023 announcement had the same shape as the uk one four months later. a short internal note. a longer explanation to canadian trade press about the unforgiving print landscape. former editors quoted in the coverage said the closure was the end of a specifically canadian editorial voice that the us edition had never carried. by the time the final issue mailed, both the english and french canadian editions had closed the same 76-year run they started together in the late 1940s.
