reader's digest as a brand reached turkey. the digest showed up in dentist waiting rooms and on aunts' bookshelves for decades, in the small pocket format everyone recognized. the uk edition specifically was a different object. it was printed for british newsagents and posted to british subscribers, with editing decisions made from london.
that edition ended in may 2024. the final print issue was dated for that month. the announcement came in a linkedin post from editor eva mackevic on the evening of 29 april 2024, saying the magazine had "come to an end" after eighty-six years. the operating company had run out of runway. the reasoning cited in the coverage was the "unforgiving" magazine landscape of the mid-2020s.
the uk edition launched in 1938. it ran through the war and the postwar general-interest boom, then through decades of slow readership erosion once tv arrived. it was almost always the largest-circulation magazine in britain during its peak years. by the 2010s the finances had gotten heavy. the parent company went into administration in 2010 over a 125-million-pound pension fund deficit. better capital pulled it out of administration and later sold it on to venture capitalist mike luckwell in 2013. hopkins bought it from luckwell in 2018.

~ the format ~
the pocket digest format was the whole product. each monthly issue was a bound handful of shorter pieces, condensed from other magazines and books, with a few original longer features and the humor pages readers remembered by name. it was aimed at the home reader who wanted a self-contained monthly with no editorial voice too sharp to hand to a neighbor. the condensed-books line ran on the side for years, running four novels in a single hardback volume for the mail-subscription audience.
~ the uk edition specifically ~
what the london operation did differently was localize. the humor sections in the uk edition were british. the health pieces were rewritten around the nhs rather than the american insurance system. that difference is why the uk brand survived as long as it did after the us edition thinned to bimonthly and finally to six times a year under trusted media brands. the us edition is still publishing in 2026 in a very reduced form. the uk edition is not.
~ the closure post ~
the announcement on 29 april 2024 was terse. eva mackevic wrote a short goodbye and confirmed the may 2024 issue would be the last one printed. the website went dormant within days. the reader's digest canada operation, another localized edition, had already announced its own closure back in december 2023 for spring 2024. between the two of them the 2024 spring window took out both the british and the canadian long-running localizations of the same title. the us edition, which had been more visibly weaker for longer, kept limping.
