~ the obituary ~
hellogiggles was a us women's lifestyle blog whose celebrity founder gave it a much bigger launch ramp than the format usually got. zooey deschanel as the public face plus a tv producer and a writer running editorial (close enough). i was never the target reader. by '11 i was a 27-year-old engineer in ankara, the part of the internet i lived on was hacker news and stackoverflow plus a small set of turkish dev forums. either way, the new girl culture site with a sitcom-actress co-founder did not show up in my reading.
zooey deschanel was at the height of the new girl run in 2011, the show had just premiered on fox to large numbers and her cultural footprint was at the peak it would ever reach. sophia rossi was the tv producer she had worked with on prior projects. molly mcaleer was a writer already running a personal blog. anyway, the three of them launched hellogiggles in may '11 as 'a positive online community for women' per the original launch press, going against the comment-section culture of the rest of the women's internet at the time.
by '15 the site was tracking well into the millions of monthly visitors per the trade press at the time, the audience was young and mostly women, with the growth curve still pointed up when the acquisition talks landed. time inc paid roughly $30 million for it in october '15 (terms not officially disclosed). the deal was part of time's broader play to own the millennial-women's-content vertical alongside instyle and people, framed at the time as the women's internet acquihire moment.
meredith corporation bought time inc in 2018 in the larger media-conglomerate consolidation, dotdash bought meredith's national media group from iac in october '21. hellogiggles bounced through three corporate parents in seven years and the editorial center of gravity drifted at each step. content updates stopped in 2023, the site stayed live as a static archive for almost two more years before dotdash meredith (renamed people inc in mid-'25) announced the permanent shutdown in august 2025.

~ how it landed ~
this part you had to be in the us for, and i was not. honestly hellogiggles ran in the women's-culture-blog tradition that included jezebel and the hairpin, but with a more upbeat tone and less of the cultural-criticism edge those sites carried. for whatever reason, the brand was about books and friendships, with beauty stuff and the lighter end of pop culture rounding out the rest (close enough). the zooey deschanel byline gave a small post a much bigger reach than the format usually allowed, which is how the site grew so fast in the first two years.
~ the time inc era ~
the october '15 acquisition put hellogiggles inside a stable of women's titles that included instyle and real simple, with martha stewart living alongside them. the editorial mandate softened from the original founders' looseness toward a more traffic-tuned style book. the founders themselves had stepped back from day-to-day work by 2015 anyway, the brand had already shifted to a staff-written model. the audience held through 2017 and 2018 across the time inc and early meredith years.
~ the slide ~
dotdash bought meredith national media in october '21 for $2.7 billion. the new owner had been built on the seo-optimized reference-content model (think about-dot-com's old approach) and the legacy meredith titles got squeezed into that mold. hellogiggles was not a natural fit for that pivot, the upbeat lifestyle voice did not translate into how-to evergreen pages. the editorial team was downsized progressively through 2022 and into 2023, the last reported byline date on the live site was sometime in '23.
~ the day it died ~
dotdash meredith announced hellogiggles' permanent shutdown in august '25. honestly the parent company had already renamed itself people inc that same year, leaning the entire portfolio onto the people magazine brand as the anchor. hellogiggles' archive went read-only at the shutdown and the domain has since redirected to a people inc landing page. zooey deschanel and the original founders had not been involved with the site for nearly a decade by then, the shutdown announcement was a corporate-cleanup line in the dotdash press cycle and barely registered outside the publishing trade.
