Instagram NFTs

2022 - 2023

stephane kasriel, meta's commerce and fintech lead, posted on 13 march 2023 that the company was winding down digital collectibles for now. that was the entire announcement. instagram had started testing the feature with a handful of creators in may 2022 and had taken it to a hundred countries by that august, and it never did more than let you display an nft you already owned with a badge attached. no switch-off date was ever published. by 11 april 2023 the badges were gone and the posts underneath them were just posts.

~ the last words ~

I was thirty-eight in 2022 and spending my working hours on computer vision for drones, which is its own hype cycle with its own funding weather. The NFT profile picture never reached me, and Instagram's version of it never really reached most people who use Instagram either. That is worth saying first, because very few Instagram users ever saw the feature at all.

Meta called them digital collectibles and kept the word NFT out of the product. The feature let you connect a crypto wallet and post something you already held, which then carried a Digital Collectible badge and a credit linking to the creator. You could not mint or sell anything inside the app.

Testing began in May 2022 with a small group of Instagram creators in the United States and reached Facebook the following month. By that August it was open to creators across a hundred countries, which is quick by the standards of anything Meta ships that widely. The whole arc, from first test to switched off, runs under a year.

~ display only ~

Display-only was a deliberate choice and it was also the weakness. A badge on a post is a claim about an object living somewhere else, and somewhere else is where the money and the risk both sat. Meta took the reputational exposure of being in NFTs while shipping none of the parts that make a market.

~ no end date ~

Kasriel's post on 13 March 2023 is the only announcement there is. The phrasing was that Meta was winding down digital collectibles for now, to focus on other ways of supporting creators and businesses, and the same post held that helping creators earn remained a priority. Nothing in it carried a date.

With no notice to read, the date comes off the product itself. Coverage through the second week of April 2023 describes the badge as gone and the posts reverting to ordinary posts, and by the 11th the support was being written about in the past tense. A feature inside a living app does not get a shutdown page or a final day. It gets removed in a release, and the record of when is whatever somebody happened to check.
