Mail.ru Agent
» see agent.mail.ru as it lived, on the wayback machine
~ the obit ~
mail.ru agent never reached me. it was the messenger for runet, the russian-language internet that ran parallel to the western web through the 2000s. in turkey we were on MSN by default once broadband took hold around 2005 to 2006. the people i talked to on msn were turkish, the protocols that mattered for my circle were msn first and icq for a few hangovers. mail.ru agent was not on the turkish radar at all, not even in the kafe scene that ran multi-protocol chats. it lived inside its own walled garden of mail.ru email accounts, which were not used in our market either.
it launched in may 2003 as a small notifier that pinged you when a new email arrived in your mail.ru inbox. about six months later mail.ru added one-to-one instant messaging to it, which turned the notifier into a proper im client. the value proposition was simple, your mail.ru email login was already your messenger identity, no separate account, no separate buddy list to build up.
in those days. mail.ru was the largest free email provider in russia at the time, ahead of yandex mail and rambler. that meant the agent client got pre-installed on every windows pc shipped with a russian-language oem image and on every russian internet kafe machine. by the late 2000s mail.ru reported around 11 million monthly active users and around 2 million people online at once during evening peaks. it was the only messenger in the country with that kind of national scale aside from icq, which mail.ru itself bought from AOL in 2010 for around 187 million dollars.

~ how it worked ~
agent looked and behaved like a slightly russified msn. contact list down the left side, chat windows that floated, status indicators (online, offline, busy, invisible). it added the things every messenger added between 2005 and 2010: voice calls between agent users, video calls, free sms to russian mobile numbers, file transfer with no real size limits. the integration with mail.ru email was the lock-in, you could see new mail arrive in the same client, you could compose a reply without leaving the window.
the client was windows-first for most of its life. mac and linux ports existed but were always a step behind. mobile apps for symbian, then later for android and ios, eventually shipped, and by 2013 to 2014 the mobile version was the dominant one. the desktop install base had peaked and was sliding the way every desktop messenger was sliding worldwide. the only thing keeping agent alive was the mail.ru account that came with it.
~ the long slow end ~
the mail.ru group merged into vk under alisher usmanov's holding through the 2010s and was renamed vk in 2021. the same company also owned icq plus odnoklassniki and the vkontakte network itself. agent kept running through this whole period without much investment, the same way icq did under the same owner. honestly, the strategic answer was vk messenger, the messenger baked into vkontakte that vk wanted everyone to use instead.
icq went first. mail.ru shut it down on june 26 2024 after 28 years. mail.ru agent followed on august 20 2024, almost exactly two months later. the announcement was short, vk said the team would now focus on vk messenger and the vk workspace b2b platform. agent users were told to migrate to vk messenger or to corporate solutions. the final shutdown closed the russian standalone-messenger era completely, the country runs on vk messenger and telegram now (telegram by far the larger of the two).
~ what got buried with it ~
agent took with it the contact graph of a generation of russian-speaking users who built their first internet identity on a mail.ru email address. the same way an icq number was the first online id for someone in central europe around 2000, an agent contact list was the first social graph for a lot of people in russia, ukraine, belarus, kazakhstan around 2005 to 2010. those contact lists are not exportable to vk messenger.
the cis internet of the 2000s has a recurring shape, a homegrown product that copied the western original closely enough to feel native, ran for a decade or two on a local user base, then got swept up into a single holding company that eventually closed it. mail.ru agent fits the pattern. so does icq under the same owner. so does qip, the multi-protocol client that ran alongside agent and shut down around 2014. the russian standalone-im category did not get replaced one for one. it just ended.
