The Legend of Heroes: Akatsuki no Kiseki

nihon falcom licensed its biggest series out and let somebody else run the online version. userjoy japan opened akatsuki no kiseki on pc on 31 august 2016 and passed a hundred thousand registrations inside a month. it then died one platform at a time, the playstation editions in 2022 and the pc original at 11:00 on 12 june 2024. the operator's domain does not answer at all now.

~ the last words ~

Nihon Falcom's Trails series began in 2004 with Trails in the Sky and has been one of the most densely written role-playing franchises in Japan ever since, a single continent's politics tracked across twenty years of single-player games. Akatsuki no Kiseki is what happened when that world was licensed out to run as an online game.

It opened on PC on 31 August 2016 and passed a hundred thousand registrations within a month. The story put two new bracers, Nacht and Chloe, into Crossbell after the West Zemuria trade conference, and worked outward from there into Liberl and a principality the series had not visited before. It kept the tactical battle system the mainline games use, and it had gacha, because it was that kind of product.

The operator is where this one gets strange. This was not Falcom running its own world. USERJOY JAPAN, the Japanese arm of the Taiwanese developer USERJOY Technology, built and ran it under license, which puts a Japanese studio's flagship setting in the hands of a foreign company for eight years, in a genre the rights holder does not make.

~ a borrowed world ~

Licensing arrangements like this one tend to produce games that feel approximately right and are owned by nobody in particular, and they end quietly because the rights holder loses nothing when they do. Falcom kept shipping Trails games throughout. The series is, if anything, healthier now than it was in 2016, with full remakes of the earliest entries selling well into 2026.

~ dying platform by platform ~

The shutdown that matters is dated 12 June 2024, but it was the last of several. A PS Vita version arrived in December 2016 and PS3 and PS4 editions followed from 2017, and all of the PlayStation service ended in June 2022. A separate product, Akatsuki no Kiseki Mobile, launched in August 2019 on phones and Switch with over 200,000 pre-registrations, then reached PC through DMM GAMES the following May. Its Switch version went first, in April 2022. The rest of it closed in August 2023.

So by the time USERJOY JAPAN announced the end of the original PC service on 13 March 2024, most of the thing had already gone. New registrations and paid purchases were cut off at 15:00 that same day. The service stopped at 11:00 on 12 June and support stayed open until 11:00 on 10 July. Unused Bracer Coins were not refunded or carried anywhere.

~ what is left of the operator ~

Eight years is respectable for a licensed online game, by any measure. What it leaves behind is unusually little. There is no offline client and no story archive on any store, which is roughly what you would expect from an operator returning a world it had been renting rather than a publisher burying its own.

The address the game lived at no longer has a DNS record. Neither does the company's Japanese domain. The Trails continent is fine and still being written. The eight years that happened on this particular corner of it are simply not reachable from anywhere.
