~ the eulogy ~
Disney Deluxe was Japan-only at the billing layer, which is a specific kind of local that has nothing to do with language. The catalog was the same catalog everyone else eventually got. What made it Japanese was that a phone company owned the relationship with the customer, and Disney did not.
The shape is familiar from Turkey, where the operators spent those same years bundling music and television into a monthly line rental and letting the bill do the work of a signup form. Turkish carriers were selling their own boxes and their own apps. Disney was not among them, and the American service everyone was reading about had not arrived here either.
It launched on 26 march 2019, run jointly by Walt Disney Japan and NTT Docomo, at 756 yen a month. The video sat in an app called Disney THEATER, with separate companion apps for the film labels carrying the non-video material. Docomo supplied the d-account login along with the payment rails, and notably did not require you to be a Docomo mobile customer to use any of it.

~ why japan got its own ~
Disney+ launched in the United States in november 2019. Japan did not get it for another seven months, and that gap is the entire reason this product existed. Disney had a partnership in Japan that predated its global streaming ambitions, and Japan was a market where a subscription attached to a mobile account converts better than one attached to a foreign credit card form.
So the company did the thing that looks strange from outside and obvious from inside. It shipped a separate service under a separate name in one country, with a partner holding the customer. For fifteen months there were two Disney streaming products in the world, and only one of them had Disney's name on the front door.
~ the mandalorian problem ~
The Mandalorian was the whole argument for Disney+. It was the show that justified the app and the price. In Japan it arrived on 26 december 2019 inside Disney Deluxe, a service co-branded with a mobile carrier that most people outside Japan had never heard of.
Solo had turned up the same way that april, and Descendants 3 in september. What Deluxe demonstrated, without meaning to, is that the flagship service was never the point of the flagship show. Distribution is whatever gets the thing onto the screen in a given country, and in Japan for fifteen months that was a phone bill.
~ the day it became something else ~
On 28 may 2020 Disney announced that Disney+ would open in Japan on 11 june. Existing Deluxe subscribers were moved across automatically, keeping their contract and their price, with the app updating itself into the new one.
That is about as gentle as a shutdown gets, and it is still a shutdown. The brand stopped existing, the partnership receded into a billing option, and a service that had been the front door to Disney's catalog in Japan for over a year left no gap behind it at all. Nobody had to cancel anything, which is precisely why nobody remembers it. The graves that hurt are the ones where something was taken away. This one just quietly turned into the thing it had been standing in for.
