Binance NFT

2021 - 2026
dead
binance nft launched 24 june 2021 as the largest centralized NFT marketplace by trading volume, at the top of the 2021-2022 NFT boom. it ran through the market crash of 2022-2024 with progressively narrower feature scope (bitcoin ordinals support dropped 4 april 2024, polygon support dropped september 2023). binance announced full shutdown on 3 june 2026 with a withdrawal deadline of 3 july 2026 at 23:59 UTC. NFT management moved to the self-custody binance wallet product.

~ the obituary ~

binance nft never had a real turkish user base of any size i could see. the crypto-adjacent turks i knew in 2021 were split between the metamask-and-opensea people and the small cohort still watching nfts warily from a distance. binance's centralized NFT platform mostly served the same audience that was already on binance for spot trading (large asian and east-european populations by user count), and the NFT interface was a sub-product of that exchange rather than a destination.

the launch date was 24 june 2021. that is very close to the top of the cycle by any market measure. NFT trading volume across all chains hit somewhere around $50 billion annualized by early 2022, then began a long slide as ETH prices unwound and speculative demand hollowed out. binance's marketplace rode that curve down alongside opensea, magic eden and the other CEX-backed peers.

the platform was quietly rearchitected in 2023 as a "streamlined" NFT feature inside the main binance exchange, rather than a dedicated marketplace. bitcoin ordinals support was pulled on 4 april 2024. polygon support was pulled september 2023. announcements read as "product streamlining", but the direction was clear. really though, binance announced the full shutdown of on-exchange NFT support on 3 june 2026, with 23:59 UTC on 3 july 2026 as the withdrawal deadline. that deadline passed ten days before this grave was written.

~ the launch at the top ~

june '21 was a specific moment in crypto. the ETH price was around $2,000 and rising. cryptopunks were setting daily records. beeple's $69 million sale at christie's was three months old. opensea was raising at unicorn valuations. every centralized exchange with an active retail-trading interface felt pressure to ship a NFT marketplace as a defensive move, mostly to keep users from routing volume to opensea directly.

binance shipped the fastest of the big exchanges. coinbase followed with a waitlist in october '21 but did not launch its marketplace until may '22 (by which point the market had already turned). the binance NFT interface used the binance smart chain plus ethereum from launch, later added polygon in mid-'22, added bitcoin ordinals in early '23 (during the brief inscriptions moment), and stripped both away as volumes fell.

~ the long fade ~

the 2022 collapse in NFT prices was faster and deeper than the 2021 run-up. floor prices on the blue-chip collections fell 90% or more between january and november '22. by 2023 the daily volume across all NFT platforms was closer to 2020 numbers than to 2022 peaks. binance's marketplace slid alongside the category. the "streamlining" language in the 2023 rearchitecture was accurate: fewer chains and fewer promotional listings. the number of professional NFT-drop-only creators using binance as a primary channel had already fallen off.

the CEX-backed marketplaces all had the same structural problem. their listing-only sellers were on-chain-native and preferred non-custodial marketplaces (opensea early, then blur through 2023-2025) rather than exchange-hosted ones. their buy-side was retail crypto traders who lost most of their appetite for JPEG risk as the cycle turned. coinbase NFT shut its US marketplace on 1 august '24 and kraken NFT closed early '25. gemini's nifty gateway rolled into an abstract-art niche instead of a general marketplace. binance held on longer than most.

~ the CEX retreat ~

binance framed the july '26 shutdown as an "upgrade" moving NFT holdings to the self-custody binance wallet product. that framing is partly true (users who moved their assets to the wallet do keep the tokens), but the marketplace piece (list-and-buy through the exchange interface) is gone. anyone who did not withdraw before 3 july '26 lost access to their listings and their unwithdrawn tokens through binance's UI.

the shape of the shutdown fits the pattern set by coinbase and kraken before it. CEX-backed NFT platforms turn out to have been a defensive product for a specific moment (the 2021-2022 wave where every exchange feared losing users to opensea) rather than a durable business line. really though, the underlying NFT tokens still exist on chain, self-custody wallets keep working, and the CEX-hosted marketplace category is effectively done. binance NFT is the last of the big four (opensea being the outlier as a non-custodial platform still limping along in 2026).
