~ the last words ~
gemini announced on 27 january 2025 that nifty gateway would close on 23 february. the platform went into withdrawal-only mode that same week. users with nfts and balances on the site were directed to move their assets over to gemini's main wallet. the official line was that closing the marketplace would let gemini focus on its 'super app' product strategy. by then nft art trading volume had already fallen from a 2021 peak of about 2.97 billion dollars down to roughly 197 million in 2024.
twin brothers duncan and griffin cock foster founded nifty gateway in 2018 as an early nft marketplace, before the category had a name people recognized. gemini, the winklevoss exchange, acquired it in november 2019. that gave nifty gateway a regulated exchange's banking infrastructure at a time when most nft platforms were still trying to bolt fiat onramps onto something raw.
march 2021 was the inflection point. christie's auctioned beeple's first 5000 days for 69.3 million dollars and put nft art onto a global press cycle. nifty gateway was already running parallel drops from beeple. a long run of celebrity releases followed across 2021 and 2022, with eminem and grimes among the highest-press drops. for a brief stretch the platform was the consumer face of the nft economy.
the first time i heard about nifty gateway was the beeple sale, like a lot of people. that was march 2021, christie's, 69 million dollars, the middle of the second year of nobody leaving the house. nft mania was a tech-twitter and crypto-trader thing happening in a corner of the internet i was watching from the engineering side, not the buying side. i never had a wallet on nifty gateway. by the time i would have looked closely, the floor prices were already coming down.

~ the early days ~
between march 2021 and may 2022, nifty gateway was the platform a long line of celebrity drops ran through. the format was scheduled releases, often with a queue and a cap, that mimicked sneaker drops more than gallery sales. it was the part of the nft market that had a glossy front end and fiat checkout through a gemini account. the website looked like a department store rather than an ethereum block explorer.
~ the collapse ~
art nft volumes collapsed across 2022 and 2023 alongside the broader crypto winter. by 2024 the entire art-nft category had fallen from its 2.97 billion dollar 2021 peak to under 200 million for the year. nifty gateway kept the lights on through that contraction with reduced staff but no real new product story. gemini meanwhile was dealing with its own problems, including the earn-program freeze and the genesis bankruptcy fallout.
~ how it ended ~
the 27 january 2025 announcement was short. nfts you held would continue to be supported through the gemini wallet, but new bids and new drops were both turned off. on 23 february the platform stopped accepting trades. withdrawal-only mode continued for a while after that. by mid-2025 most of the curated collections once hosted on the platform were either mirrored to ipfs by the artists themselves, or left as broken images on third-party indexers.
