Windows Mail and Calendar
~ the obituary ~
every windows machine i set up between 2012 and 2024 had this thing in the start menu. the white envelope tile. i never tapped it on purpose. i ran outlook on the work laptop, gmail in a browser tab on the personal one. windows mail was just a default that sat there with the calendar twin next to it, waiting to be invoked for an email link that always wanted to open in something else.
windows mail and calendar shipped on october 26 2012 with windows 8. they were metro apps, the new microsoft tile-and-touch ui, designed for the surface tablet line. mail was bundled with calendar and people so you could not remove one without the others. it was a single suite microsoft was hoping people would pick over installed outlook on their desktops.
they survived windows 8.1, windows 10 and windows 11. across twelve years the apps got new themes, accent colors, support for outlook.com plus gmail plus yahoo plus exchange, and a calendar with weather hooks. on the last day of 2024 microsoft turned off the servers that let them send or receive mail. icons stayed, the apps still launch, but the connection is gone.

~ the climb ~
microsoft needed a mail client that fit the touch-first windows 8 vision. installed outlook was the desktop tool of office workers, win32 to its bones, with toolbars stacked seven deep. metro mail was the opposite: full-screen, three-pane, swipe-friendly. it could handle multiple accounts in one inbox before that was an outlook feature.
when windows 10 reverted away from the touch-first design, mail and calendar stuck around as the in-box options for people who never installed office. on a fresh windows install they were what opened when you clicked a mailto link. for a lot of pcs out there this was the only mail client that ever ran.
~ the actual end ~
in 2023 microsoft started pushing the new outlook for windows, a complete rewrite running edge webview underneath. it could do everything windows mail did and more, and it would be free for personal accounts. the in-box mail app started prompting users to try the new outlook in october 2023. by mid 2024 the message hardened into a migration deadline.
december 31 2024 was when send-and-receive was revoked. the apps still open from the start menu, the icons still sit in the taskbar for people who pinned them, but mail no longer flows. windows mail and calendar joined outlook express, windows live mail and inbox by gmail in the long graveyard of microsoft and google mail clients that exist now only as start menu icons people forgot to remove.
~ the next chapter ~
the new outlook for windows is the replacement and it is also the next item that will probably get killed. it is a web view in a frame. when microsoft decides the office team wants the entire mail experience to live in outlook.com directly, the new outlook will go the way of the old. that is the cycle this app rode for twelve years.
