Microsoft Paint 3D

~ the obituary ~
paint 3d shipped with the windows 10 creators update on 11 april 2017. it was the lift london studio's swing at making 3d content creation a default-app idea, the way paint had made 2d sketching a default-app idea on every windows machine since 1985. the start screen had a stamp-and-extrude flow for turning brush strokes into 3d shapes, plus a button to publish your model to remix3d.com so other users could remix it. the whole thing was positioned as a bridge between the old paint workflow and the windows mixed reality headsets microsoft was about to ship.
the windows mixed reality headsets did not happen at consumer scale. remix3d.com shut down on 10 january 2020 after barely two and a half years as a public community. paint 3d kept shipping in the windows 10 default install through the rest of the decade, then in windows 11 from 2021, getting smaller updates and less attention. on 4 november 2024 microsoft pulled it from the microsoft store and stopped shipping it as a default app. installed copies kept working but nobody could get a fresh one.
i had paint 3d in my start menu the entire time. i never opened it on purpose. i was on windows 10 then 11 across two work machines in ankara, doing computer vision work for uav systems on the side, and the closest i came to using paint 3d was right-clicking a png in windows explorer and accidentally hitting "edit with paint 3d" instead of "edit". every time that happened i would close the app, navigate back, and pick the classic paint entry instead. that workflow describes most of paint 3d's actual usage pattern for most of its install base.

~ what it tried to be ~
microsoft built paint 3d as a casual on-ramp to 3d modeling for people who would never open blender or maya. the metaphor was that you would draw shapes the way you did in paint, then stamp them with surface materials before importing them into mixed reality scenes. there was a magic-select tool for cutting 2d objects out of photos and a sticker palette for applying patterns to 3d primitives. the technical work behind these features was legitimately interesting. the cultural fit was not there.
nobody woke up on a tuesday morning wanting to make a 3d model. the apps that succeed at casual creation succeed because they sit between you and an existing impulse: instagram intercepts the urge to share, capcut intercepts the urge to make a video. paint 3d intercepted no impulse anyone had. it would have needed an existing use case for casual 3d content and there was not one waiting to be served.
~ what it became ~
by 2020 paint 3d had stopped getting feature work. the new paint app that shipped in windows 11 in 2021 took back the standard 2d-sketch position. microsoft started referring to paint 3d as a legacy app inside its own ecosystem. the company recommended 3d viewer for opening models and a babylon.js-based web tool for actual editing. neither replacement carried the start-menu real estate paint 3d had taken from the original paint program.
the 4 november 2024 store removal was the formal retirement. installed copies kept working into 2026 for users who had pinned the app to a taskbar before the pull. when those machines get reset or upgraded, paint 3d goes with them. the path from a default windows 10 app to a memory takes about seven years on this curve.
~ the day it died ~
microsoft did not stage a farewell for paint 3d. the windows central piece from august 2024 broke the news of the november date, and microsoft confirmed it with a one-paragraph support notice the following week. the app store listing returned a "no longer available" banner on the day itself. that was the entire send-off. the strange part is how little anyone missed it. paint 3d's exit generated less coverage than the retirement of wordpad three months later, even though wordpad had been a default windows app since 1995 and paint 3d had been one since 2017. the gap suggests how shallow the app's actual hold on its install base had been.
