Microsoft 3D Movie Maker
~ the obituary ~
american children with a family pc used 3d movie maker. i was not in that demographic. in 1995 i was eleven years old in ankara without a windows 95 machine at home, and the only kids software i would see for another three years was whatever a turkish bilgisayar shop happened to import in a cardboard sleeve. the microsoft kids catalog as a whole, with its branded mczee mascot and its talking-help-character pedagogy, was a north american home-pc category that did not really cross over.
what 3d movie maker actually was: a children's filmmaking application released october 9 1995 by microsoft home's microsoft kids subsidiary. it used the BRender 3d engine licensed from argonaut software, which let it render real-time 3d characters against pre-rendered backdrops on a 75 mhz pentium. you picked actors from a roster, placed them in a city street or a haunted house, gave them lines and movement cues, then exported a short film. the help character was mczee, a purple flat-headed cartoon man with green hair, voiced by michael shapiro, shared with creative writer from the same year.
the cultural footprint did not really start until much later. comic sans, which microsoft had originally designed for microsoft bob, made its public debut inside 3d movie maker before later shipping with windows 95 plus. by the mid 2000s the entire game had become a kind of foundational fossil for early youtube absurdist video editing. movies made in 3d movie maker by adults, often involving the default characters reciting nintendo-game scripts, were one of the entry surfaces for the youtube poop subgenre.

~ the climb ~
microsoft kids was a small division inside microsoft home, the consumer publishing arm that also produced encarta and microsoft money. the strategy in 1995 was that windows 95 was about to launch every family pc, and microsoft wanted to be the default brand on the family pc's software shelf too. 3d movie maker was the headline title for the holiday 1995 buyer. it cost about thirty dollars retail. the box art had bright primary colors and a tagline about kids directing their own movies.
the product had real merit. the BRender engine ran convincingly on consumer hardware of the era. argonaut had built the same engine into starfighter 3000 and earlier 3d games. seeing it repurposed inside a kids app meant the visuals were a step up from the flat sprite-on-background look most edutainment titles shipped with. the writing tool let kids type lines in a script panel and the actors would lip-sync them, which felt like real filmmaking magic in 1995.
~ what got buried with it ~
microsoft killed off the microsoft home brand in the late 90s as the company pivoted toward enterprise software and the xbox. the kids subsidiary disappeared along with it. by the early 2000s most of the catalog was out of print and 3d movie maker was running into compatibility problems on windows xp. by 2003 microsoft had stopped reissuing it. there was no official obituary, just retail shelves that gradually stopped carrying it.
the code sat on microsoft's internal source-control systems for the next two decades. nothing happened with it until a hardware archivist named foone turing tweeted at the official microsoft account in early april 2022 asking them to open-source it. microsoft, somewhat unexpectedly, said they would try. the BRender engine was owned by a third party at the time, but argonaut's old owner found a copy of the source and agreed to release it too. the full code dropped on github under the MIT license on may 4 2022.
~ the long tail ~
the open-source reissue revived the small youtube poop community around the software. modders have since produced compatibility patches for windows 11 alongside conversions of the proprietary file format. the entire act of preserving a 1995 children's product through a github repository in 2022 is a rare case of a software corporation behaving with a sense of cultural responsibility about something it had no commercial reason to maintain.
the deeper part of the story is that 3d movie maker is the canonical origin of comic sans, which means a lot of internet typography that other people have strong opinions about can be traced back to a single microsoft kids project from the windows 95 era. vincent connare designed the font specifically because mczee's speech bubbles in microsoft bob were originally going to use times new roman, and times new roman looked ridiculous coming out of a cartoon dog. comic sans got pulled into 3d movie maker first, then into the wider windows 95 plus pack. from there it spread into every birthday card and lost cat flyer of the next thirty years. the cd-rom died. the font would not.
