Windows Movie Maker

2000 - 2017

windows movie maker shipped on millennium edition in 2000 and turned every kid with a webcam into an editor. the title-card font was a generation's first contact with typography. microsoft pulled the download in january 2017 and the video editor in the photos app inherited what was left.

windows movie maker had its turkish moment around 2006 to 2010. that is the window when youtube turkey filled up with anime music videos cut to within an inch of their lives, and counter-strike highlight reels rendered out at 320x240. half of it was made in windows movie maker because windows movie maker was already on the machine. the other half was made in sony vegas, but that was for the kids who knew where to find sony vegas.

the program shipped first on windows me in september 2000, then properly on windows xp in 2001 once microsoft had figured out the timeline ui. it had a clip bin and a timeline that exported to.wmv. that was it. you could not do anything advanced. you could absolutely make a one-minute slideshow with star wipes between every photo and a creed song under it, and millions of people did.

microsoft kept rebuilding it. movie maker for vista. then windows live movie maker in 2009 with a ribbon ui and direct upload to youtube. each rebuild was less popular than the last, because by 2009 free editors had moved into the browser and onto phones, and the people who made movie maker videos in 2005 had upgraded to imovie or moved on. when microsoft pulled the download from windows essentials in january 2017, the announcement read like an obituary for a program already buried.

~ how it landed ~

movie maker existed because microsoft wanted to give windows me a reason to exist. me itself was a transitional desktop operating system that nobody enjoyed using, but it shipped with the first version of movie maker plus a couple of other consumer multimedia bets. only movie maker actually mattered to anyone outside the marketing deck.

the standout feature was that it could render to.wmv at sizes that would actually play back over a 56k modem download. the quality was terrible. the file sizes were tiny. for a teenager in 2003 with no other free editor available, this was the only path between a digital camcorder and a video posted online.

~ the inheritance ~

the photos app on windows 10 quietly added a video editor in 2018 that did most of what movie maker did with worse defaults. clipchamp, which microsoft acquired in 2021, eventually replaced that. neither one occupies the cultural slot movie maker held, because the cultural slot has moved to capcut and the timeline-on-a-phone paradigm. the kids who would have been making movie maker videos in 2005 are making capcut edits in 2025.

the file format that survives is the.wmv container, which youtube still accepts and which gets uploaded by people who have not opened a video editor since 2008 and finally got around to digitizing the wedding tape.
