~ the obituary ~
theranos was a silicon valley biotech founded by elizabeth holmes in 2003. she was nineteen and had just dropped out of stanford's chemical engineering program. the company's pitch never really changed across fifteen years. take a drop of blood from a finger, run it through a small box called the edison, get back results for hundreds of diagnostic tests at a fraction of the lab cost. it was a pitch built for a board of retired generals and pharmaceutical executives. it never had a working product.
by 2014 theranos was valued at 9 billion dollars in a private round. holmes was on the cover of fortune in june and forbes in october. she wore a black turtleneck and spoke in a deep voice that several engineers later confirmed she had trained herself into. the board carried henry kissinger and george shultz, plus a row of other names that made the company's credibility look heavier than its science was.
john carreyrou's october 2015 wall street journal piece broke the story. the edison did not work. theranos was running most of its tests on commercial siemens analyzers, diluting the finger-prick samples to make them fit, which made the result distributions wide enough that the company had voided tens of thousands of patient tests without telling anyone. the sec charged holmes with fraud in march 2018 and the company dissolved that september, leaving an empty office and a long auction list of lab equipment.
this is a story i watched from a distance. i was at the other end of the engineering map. medical-device fraud in a palo alto lab does not pass through ankara except as headlines. i read the carreyrou book in 2018 and watched amanda seyfried play holmes on hulu in 2022. it stayed a case study for me. holmes was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison in november 2022 and reported to fpc bryan in may 2023.

the edison was a small benchtop device with a robotic arm inside. it pipetted small volumes of diluted blood onto cartridges. in theory it could run dozens of tests in parallel. in practice the dilution introduced enough error that the result distributions came back wider than any hospital lab would accept. internal employees raised the issue for years. they were told to stay quiet or were pushed out.
the second-generation device was called minilab. it was demonstrated in august 2016 at a scientific conference in a presentation that did not show it running any actual tests against real lab results. the minilab never shipped.
~ the wreck ~
cms found the theranos newark lab so out of compliance in 2016 that it banned holmes from running a clinical lab for two years, and walgreens pulled its theranos wellness centers across the country. by 2018 the cash was gone.
holmes was convicted in january 2022 on four counts of fraud against investors. her co-defendant ramesh balwani was convicted on twelve counts in a separate trial that july. holmes started her sentence at fpc bryan in 2023 with the release date currently set for 2032. her appeal was denied in february 2025.
~ the residue ~
the theranos story produced more secondary media than any silicon valley fraud since enron. carreyrou's book became an hbo documentary in 2019, then a hulu series with amanda seyfried in 2022. for the medical device world it changed how the fda thinks about cleared-but-not-validated lab claims. for the venture world it changed almost nothing.
