Fate/Grand Order Arcade

2018 - 2026

sega took the pitch to type-moon in february 2016: put fate/grand order in a cabinet and let three players a side queue up for it. it ran seven years and eight months on a plot that was the mobile game's discarded first draft, with 120 servants including some that existed nowhere else. the limited-time content stopped in march 2024 and the game coasted on reruns from there. last plays were taken at 25:59 on 30 march 2026, which is japanese arcade time for two in the morning.

To play this one you had to be standing in Japan. Fate/Grand Order Arcade was a cabinet bolted to a floor in a game center, and it took your fare card as payment. No other country ever got it, and no other country was ever going to.

Sega brought the idea to Type-Moon in February 2016, and the arcade concept itself came out of Delightworks, from Yosuke Shiokawa. There was a press showcase in December 2017 and the cabinets went live on 26 July 2018, running on Sega's ALLS UX board. Up to six people could sit down at once, three on each side, which is a thing the phone version of Fate/Grand Order has never been able to offer anyone.

The part worth knowing is what story it told. The arcade game was built from the mobile game's initial draft, the version of the plot that got rewritten before release. So for nearly eight years there was a Fate/Grand Order running in Japanese arcades that narrated the road not taken, with 120 Servants in the roster and several that appeared in the cabinet and nowhere else. Who got added was decided jointly by Type-Moon, Sega and Lasengle, the last of which drew the Saint Graph art. The machine also printed what it gave you: Saint Graphs and Craft Essences came out of the cabinet as physical cards.

The wind-down was announced long before the end. In January 2024 Sega published a change of operating policy: limited-time content would stop at the end of that March, and after that the game would run on permanent content and scheduled updates. That is two years of a game being kept warm rather than developed. FGO ARCADE PROJECT gave notice on 29 January 2026 that the service would close on 30 March, and cabinets came out of shops in stages, so plenty of players lost it before the official date.

~ the cabinet took your transit card ~

You could pay for it without touching a coin slot. The machines accepted Rakuten Edy, nanaco, WAON, transit IC cards and Sega's own PASERI, with the caveat that it varied by venue and that PiTaPa, of all of them, was refused. That is a small detail and it dates the machine precisely. By 2018 a Japanese arcade cabinet was a networked terminal with a billing relationship attached to it, and the coin slot had become the fallback option.

The official closing time was 25:59 on 30 March 2026, which in ordinary clock terms is 01:59 on 31 March. Japanese venues write late hours past midnight as a continuation of the previous day, because the business day has not ended just because the calendar one has. The Chaldea Web My Room beta, the online companion piece, switched off at the same minute.

No reason was ever published. Sega ran a crossover event with its other arcade titles through that final March, which is the house custom for a Japanese arcade game being walked to the door.

~ the site is still up ~

arcade.fate-go.jp answers today, and it is a Vue application that renders nothing without JavaScript, so what a plain reader gets is the meta tags. Those still sell the game in the present tense: a 3-on-3 heroic-spirit team battle with simple controls, where the Saint Graphs and Craft Essences have become physical cards. The last script deployed to that host is stamped 14:28 on 31 March 2026, roughly twelve hours after the final play.

~ what the phone kept ~

Fate/Grand Order on mobile was not touched by any of this and is still being updated. The franchise lost a platform and carried on, and the people who lost something were the ones who had been travelling to play. A cabinet dies where it stands.
