Shift 2: Unleashed
~ the goodbye ~
Shift 2: Unleashed came out on 29 March 2011 in North America and two days later in Europe, on Windows and on both consoles then current. Slightly Mad Studios built it in Britain and Electronic Arts published it under the Need for Speed name, which by 2011 covered two unrelated kinds of game: the street racer with the police chases, and this, a circuit simulation with a career that ran through real series on real tracks.
It reviewed well. 84 on Metacritic for the PC version and low eighties on the consoles, and the reviews kept landing on the same feature. The cockpit camera sat inside a helmet that moved with the driver, so the head turned toward the apex before the car did, and a hard enough impact grayed the whole picture out.
Everything social in it ran through Autolog, which EA had introduced in Hot Pursuit the year before and renamed Need for Speed DNA here. It pushed your friends' lap times at you on a wall and generated challenges out of them. It was a good system, and it was also what made a single-player racing game dependent on servers somebody had to keep paying for.
On 31 May 2021 the game came off every digital store with no notice. Three months later, on 31 August, the servers went dark.
By 2011 I had been out of games for years. My stretch was 2002 to 2005, in Ankara internet cafes, and it was Counter-Strike on machines somebody else maintained. A simulation you bought on a disc and then found locked out of half its own features a decade later belongs to a way of owning games I skipped.

~ five at once ~
Shift 2 did not die alone. EA retired Need for Speed Carbon, Undercover, Shift, Shift 2: Unleashed and The Run on the same schedule. The statement said the number of players had reached a point where the work behind the scenes was no longer feasible, which is the standard sentence and is probably even true.
What people objected to was the sequencing. The store pages went first and the announcement came with them, so anybody who had been meaning to buy one of the five found out by going to look for it. A game with no store page and no servers is hard to acquire legally and impossible to acquire complete.
~ the studio ~
Slightly Mad Studios came out of the wreck of Blimey! Games in January 2009 and did both Shift games for EA before going independent with Project CARS, funded directly through its own portal by the people who wanted it. Codemasters bought the studio in November 2019 for around thirty million dollars. EA completed its purchase of Codemasters in February 2021, so by the time EA turned off the Shift 2 servers that August, the studio that had built the game was inside EA. Whether anybody there was asked is not recorded anywhere.
~ what still runs ~
The disc works. Career mode plays offline in 2026 exactly as it did in 2011, which is more than the people who played Need for Speed World ever got. What stopped was Autolog, so the wall of friends' times is empty and the challenges built on top of it never generate.
Wikipedia dates the shutdown to 1 September, one day off from every press report and from EA's own notice, which said 31 August. It is a trivial disagreement and it is the kind a delisted game collects: once the store page is gone, there is no authoritative place left to check.
