Star Wars: Hunters

2024 - 2025
dead
zynga put it on a nintendo direct stage in february 2021 and then shipped it in june 2024, three years and four months later, after two public delays. it was a squad arena shooter for switch and phones, set in the gap between the last two film trilogies, and it landed at a metacritic 57. the final content update arrived on 15 april 2025 with one new character and in-app purchases already switched off. the servers closed on 1 october. the announcement outlived the game.

~ the last words ~

Star Wars: Hunters was announced in february 2021 and shut down in october 2025, and the stretch in the middle where you could actually play it was the short part. Forty months of trailers and delays, then sixteen months of service. Most of this game's public life happened before it existed.

Zynga published it, built inside its NaturalMotion studio under license from Lucasfilm Games. The reveal was on a Nintendo Direct, which is a good stage and an expensive one, and the premise was a four-versus-four arena shooter set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Not a war. An arena on Vespaara, where the leftovers of the Empire and the Rebellion fought each other for a paying crowd, which is a tidy way to license every silhouette in the franchise without touching the plot of anything.

Then it slipped. Planned for 2021, it moved to 2023 and then moved again to 2024. There was a soft launch in a handful of Asian and Pacific markets in late 2021 that most of the world never saw. A Windows version was announced and then cancelled. It finally shipped on 4 june 2024 for Switch and phones, free, and the reviews came back at a Metacritic 57 with forty percent of critics recommending it.

I have no personal relationship with this one at all. I was forty when it launched, I do not own a Switch, and mobile free-to-play is a category I have watched from a distance for fifteen years without once opening the door.

~ the long wait ~

The three-year gap between reveal and release is the fact that explains everything else. A licensed free-to-play game that announces early is spending money on attention it cannot convert yet, and by the time it arrives the audience has been asked to care twice. Some of them already did the caring and then moved on.

It also meant the game shipped into a different market than the one it was designed for. In 2021 there was still an argument that a Star Wars hero shooter on Switch could find a mainstream audience. By mid-2024 the mobile arena shooter had consolidated hard into a small number of titles that people already had installed, and the cost of getting someone to try a new one had gone up considerably.

~ what it actually was ~

The design work was not lazy. The hunters were built as original characters rather than reskins of film leads, and the roster ran from a wookiee bounty hunter to a stormtrooper who still believed in the Empire years after it had lost. That second one is a genuinely good idea in a franchise that mostly treats troopers as furniture.

What it did not have was a reason to come back on tuesday. Free-to-play arena games live or die on the loop that pulls you in daily, and the reviews that liked Hunters and the reviews that did not both agreed the loop was thin. IGN gave it a seven out of ten while The Guardian gave it three out of five, and the spread between those two numbers is smaller than it looks. Nobody was angry at this game, which in a genre that runs on habit is worse than being hated.

~ what replaced it ~

The end was announced in mid-march 2025. Zynga said a final content update would land on 15 april with a support hunter named Tuya in it, and that service would end on 1 october. In-app purchases were switched off across every platform at the same time, which is the honest version of a shutdown: they stopped taking money six months before they stopped running the game.

There is no offline mode. There is no archive. A four-versus-four arena game with no single-player content and no local play leaves nothing behind at all when the matchmaking stops, and that is now the standard shape of a Star Wars product death. Galaxies at least had a world you could describe afterward. Hunters had sixteen months of matches and then a login screen that said the service had ended.
