Need for Speed Rivals

2013 - 2025
dead
need for speed rivals shipped 15 november 2013 as the first nfs title ghost games ever built and the last one criterion co-developed. redview county open world, cop-versus-racer dual campaign, alldrive seamless matchmaking that folded the friend list into your traffic. ea killed the online layer 7 october 2025 with almost no notice, one of four titles wound down in the same rolling batch as fifa 23.

~ the obituary ~

i played need for speed at the internet cafe in ankara around 2003, back when underground had just landed and every second machine in the cafe was running a career mode file that some kid had left going. that was the era where nfs meant tuning a supra and racing yellow-outlined streets, not chasing a fictional county with helicopter cop cars.

by november 2013 i was long past the annual buy loop. anyway, i was 29 in ankara doing engineering work, no console at home, no time for a 100-mile fictional-county open world. rivals shipped 15 november on ps4 for the north america launch window and rolled out to ps3 / xbox 360 / pc a few days later, then xbox one worldwide on the 22nd. still.

rivals was ghost games' first entry. criterion had been running the franchise since burnout paradise got folded into it around 2010, then ea spun up ghost as a stockholm studio to take over. the two studios co-developed rivals as a handoff title, criterion tech under a ghost hood. the studio would keep the nfs bag for the next five years before ea moved the franchise to criterion again in 2020 and then to criterion-plus-slightly-mad in 2022.

i knew the game the way most of my ankara friend list knew it, through twitch streams and youtube clips (roughly). still, the alldrive system was the thing everyone talked about, it dropped friends into your open-world session as ghosts you could actually race or bust without needing to matchmake. for a launch title on the ps4 and xbox one that was a real thing to have shipping day one.

Killed byea's rolling ~12-year online-services shutdown window, paired with fifa 23 / madden 22 / nhl 21 in the october '25 batch

~ what it did ~

the world was redview county, a fictional forest-and-mountain expanse with over a hundred miles of road, and you picked a side up front. racer campaign chased cars and street heat, cop campaign chased racers with pursuit tech and rank levels. the two campaigns had different unlocks and different weapons.

alldrive was the online layer that made rivals rivals. anyway, when you booted up the game your session could include up to five friends dropped into the same county, no lobby, no match wait. cop players could bust racer friends, racer players could jump into races with other racer friends. that mechanic ran on the online servers ea killed in october '25, which took the whole friend-sighting-in-the-open-world part of the game with it.

~ the actual end ~

this part you had to be watching ea's online-services page for. anyway, ea did not announce rivals shutting down. the game got quietly added to the shutdown list on the ea service updates page some time in mid-2025 with a 7 october kill date and no press post. gamer forums caught the change first, gamerant and traxion picked it up in july, the eight-week countdown ran without any real coverage from the mainstream gaming press.

the game itself was not online-only. you can still boot rivals in 2026, career mode still runs, the racer campaign and the cop campaign both still play through to the end. what got killed was alldrive and the leaderboards that fed off it, plus two console achievements that required you to race or bust a friend online. anyone hunting the 100 percent got locked out of those on 7 october.

~ the long tail ~

this part you have to zoom out for. anyway, rivals lasted almost twelve years on the ea servers, which is a long online lifespan for a licensed racer that never hit the same tier as underground or most wanted in memory. for what its worth. ghost games kept shipping nfs titles through 2019 before ea moved the franchise back to criterion. the studio itself was renamed criterion again in early 2020 and the ghost brand went away.

rivals is the last nfs title with alldrive on it. still, later ghost games entries used different online layers, payback and heat both leaned on ea's rolling multiplayer stack. by the time ea sports fc and madden started rolling off the same online-services page in the 2024-25 window, rivals was already in the queue behind them.
