Real Racing 3

2013 - 2026
dead
real racing 3 was ea and firemonkeys' mobile racing flagship. it shipped february 2013 with licensed cars from porsche to bugatti and ran for thirteen years on a freemium grind that critics hated and players kept paying for. ea delisted the app in december 2025 and pulled the servers on 19 march 2026.

~ the obituary ~

real racing 3 was the kind of mobile game my colleagues played in airport lounges. i would see the porsche cockpit on the next seat over, the tilt-to-steer thumb of a senior engineer killing time before a delayed istanbul flight. i never installed it. by 2013 i had already given up on phone games as a personal habit, except for the very occasional puzzle thing that did not ask for an account.

the game shipped 28 february 2013 on ios and android. it was firemonkeys studios out of melbourne, the team ea had assembled from the remains of iron monkey and firemint. the previous two real racing games had been premium paid titles. number three flipped the model. the download was free, the timers were not. you could repair a damaged car instantly with gold, or you could wait two hours. you could buy the next porsche, or you could grind sixty races for it.

that bargain ran for thirteen years. on a phone game shelf where most live-service titles die after eighteen months, real racing 3 outlasted nearly every competitor in its lane. eurogamer's launch review called the monetization the embodiment of every sceptic's worst nightmare and gave the gameplay a soft pass anyway. the install count climbed past a half billion at some point in the late 2010s. ea kept feeding it new manufacturers and the formula one license. the catalogue grew past 500 cars across 52 brands.

~ the freemium grind ~

the loop was the loop. every race you finished earned a small pile of dollars (the soft currency) and slowly degraded the car. tyres wore down, engines coughed. you fixed it with money or with time. the math was tuned so that competing in the next event always took just a little more than you had. that gap is where the gold conversion sat, the same gold you could buy on the app store in packs ranging from a few cents to a hundred dollars.

critics hated it. players paid anyway. for a certain kind of phone-gaming session, the fifteen-minute window on the bus or in a waiting room, real racing 3 delivered better-looking circuits than anything else on a touchscreen. the formula one update in 2018 turned the game into the closest thing to a free codemasters f1 on a phone. that update alone pulled in numbers ea's mobile division celebrated internally for years after.

~ the day it died ~

ea announced the shutdown in october 2025. the app left the store on 18 december 2025. the servers held for another three months while the game ran in a kind of museum mode, no new events, no new cars. on 19 march 2026 the matchmaking layer went dark and the leaderboards stopped reporting. ea's notice cited maintenance cost.

all of the progression lived on ea's side. cars unlocked. gold spent on careers built over years. when the server went, the cars went. real racing 3 had no offline mode worth running. you can still install old apks of some 2014 versions if you know where to look, but the official game is a screen of error messages.

~ the long tail ~

firemonkeys had already been wound down before the game itself died. ea closed the melbourne studio in 2024 after burning through most of the senior team on need for speed mobile work. slingshot inherited the racing live service for the same long sunset as the sims mobile. by 2025 there were no real racing developers left, only operators.

the next real racing was announced as real racing mobile 4 in late 2026 under a new contractor. it ships into a phone game market that no longer wants what real racing 3 was. the porsche on the loading screen is gone for now.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
