Anthem

2019 - 2026
dead
anthem was bioware's bid at a destiny-style looter-shooter, built on an engine the studio could not bend, shipped in february 2019 in a state that critics treated as a betrayal of the bioware name. ea kept the servers running for almost five years past the cancellation of the planned overhaul. on 12 january 2026 the lights went out and the always-online game became unplayable overnight.

~ the obit ~

the first time i heard about anthem was at e3 2017, a few months before my 34th birthday. ea opened its showcase with a slow cinematic of a javelin armor suit flying through a green canyon, and the room clapped at it. by the time the game shipped in february 2019 i had spent enough years on bioware games (baldur's gate 2, the first kotor, mass effect through me3) to know what kind of company it had been and to suspect it was not that company anymore. dragon age 2 had been hurried, mass effect andromeda had shipped broken. anthem was the third strike for me and i did not buy it.

the game itself was a tragedy of process more than design. jason schreier's april 2019 report on its development showed a project that spent most of its time figuring out what kind of game it wanted to be, then built itself in roughly a year using frostbite, an engine that was not made for what they were asking. the casey hudson departure in 2014, the leadership drift, the engine fights, the open-world that kept changing shape. the team shipped a game that looked extraordinary in flight and felt hollow on the ground.

bioware did try to fix it. anthem next was announced in february 2020 as a real rebuild rather than another live-service patch cycle. on 24 february 2021 ea pulled the plug on the rebuild and put the studio back on mass effect and dragon age. the servers, oddly, kept running. for almost five more years you could log in to a game nobody was repairing.

~ the engine that wouldn't bend ~

frostbite was the dice-built engine designed for battlefield. ea had decided every internal studio would use it, partly to amortize the license, partly to standardize. bioware fought it on dragon age inquisition, then on mass effect andromeda. each project burned developer-years building rpg systems that frostbite did not natively support: inventory, loot, world streaming, dialog rendering. anthem inherited the same fight at the same scale and the team lost it.

~ the day it died ~

ea announced the shutdown in january 2025. you had a year of warning, the messaging was clean by ea's standards. on 12 january 2026 the matchmaking servers went dark, and because anthem was always-online with no offline mode, the disc on your shelf became a coaster. there is no campaign you can replay, no horde mode you can run solo. all of it lived behind the server boundary.

~ what came after ~

a small group of fans had been working on a private-server emulator and an offline patch for months before the shutdown. within days of the official end a community build appeared that lets you boot the game into a stripped-down offline mode. honestly, it works for what it is: a way to fly the javelin in the world one more time, alone, no progression. better than nothing. not the game anyone paid sixty dollars for.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
