Hellgate - London

2007 - 2009

hellgate london was the diablo team's first act after they left blizzard. it was supposed to be the next great isometric action-rpg with a first-person camera bolted on. instead it shipped half-finished in 2007, and the studio went bankrupt nine months after that. the western servers went off in january 2009, and hanbitsoft kept a korean version on life support for another decade before that died too.

hellgate london was supposed to be a diablo game by another name. in 2003 bill roper and the leadership of blizzard north left blizzard after a contract dispute and founded flagship studios in san francisco. they had been the people behind diablo and diablo ii, and the pitch for their new company was an action-rpg with the same loot-and-class skeleton but a 3d first-person camera and a real-time engine. it took four years to build. namco bandai and electronic arts split publishing duties, and it shipped on halloween 2007.

the launch was rough. the game ran badly on most common hardware, and the loot tables had been balanced for an audience that was not actually showing up. on top of that the subscription model layered onto a boxed retail price annoyed reviewers from day one. flagship had also overcommitted on a second project called mythos that was further along than hellgate by the end of 2007. cash burned through quickly. flagship studios filed for chapter 7 in august 2008, ten months after launch.

i remember hellgate from the 2007-2008 window the way most engineering students of that era remember anything bill roper touched: respectfully and at a distance. the diablo team going independent was the kind of news pc gamer wrote a multi-page feature about, and the failure was the cautionary follow-up a year later. by the time the north american and european servers went off on january 31 2009, the game itself had been dead in the press for six months. hanbitsoft in korea kept a version going as hellgate global until 2016, but western players had stopped paying attention long before.

blizzard north was the studio that made diablo. when the bulk of its leadership left blizzard in june 2003 over the way vivendi's executive team had handled their bonuses, it was an industry-defining departure. roper and the schaefer brothers together with david brevik had built one of the most copied loot-game templates in pc history. they took that institutional memory to flagship studios and started fresh, with new investors and a long runway. hellgate london was the result of that runway.

the diablo iii team at blizzard proper was effectively rebuilt around the people who stayed. when hellgate disappointed and flagship folded, half of the blizzard north emigrants ended up back in the games industry one studio over. roper later rejoined cryptic studios and worked on champions online. david brevik would turn up at gazillion with a marvel license, which became its own pedigree-collapse story on this site.

~ the day flagship folded ~

by mid-2008 the studio had stopped making payroll. comerica bank, which had lent against the hellgate ip as collateral, took the ip in lieu of repayment when flagship entered chapter 7 in august. mythos, the project that was supposed to be flagship's free-to-play hit, went with it. hanbitsoft in korea, which had been operating a korean hellgate service, bought the rights to keep its version alive. the western community got the january 31 2009 server-off notice over the winter break.

~ the long tail ~

hellgate kept coming back in korea after the western servers died. hellgate resurrection launched in 2014, and hellgate global followed with a tokyo zone added in 2015. each iteration found a smaller audience than the last. the game's actual cultural legacy in 2026 is the pedigree-collapse narrative. when somebody says "the diablo guys left blizzard," what follows is almost always the hellgate epilogue, with the marvel heroes epilogue right behind it.
