The Matrix Online

2005 - 2009

the matrix online launched march 22, 2005 as the official continuation of the film trilogy with the wachowskis' blessing. then world of warcraft happened, and matrix online never crossed 50,000 subscribers. warner bros sold the operation to sony online entertainment in june, three months after launch. soe ran it down a corridor of layoffs and merged servers until july 31, 2009, when fewer than 500 active players logged in to watch the screen go dark.

~ the last words ~

by 2005 i was on a turkish ttnet line playing ultima online private servers and counter-strike at the local internet cafe. the matrix online showed up that march with a $50 box price and a $15 monthly subscription, and i never met a single person in ankara who paid either. the matrix as a film franchise had reached everywhere. the matrix as a world of warcraft competitor was a much harder sell.

monolith productions built it. warner bros and sega published it. the wachowskis treated it as canonical, which meant the post-revolutions storyline of the films would only continue inside this game. paul chadwick wrote the chapter arcs. live events were performed by gms playing morpheus and the agents. for a small core of players this was the actual sequel. for everyone else it was a sluggish mmo with a confusing combat system shipped against world of warcraft, three months out from its meteor-strike launch.

warner sold the publishing rights to sony online entertainment on june 21, 2005. soe was already running everquest and would soon mishandle star wars galaxies through its new game enhancement. matrix online entered the soe machine as a low-priority title. servers were merged from nine down to one over the next two years. by 2009 fewer than 500 active subscribers were left. soe announced the shutdown in april and pulled the plug on july 31, 2009. the final hour was a server-wide gathering at mara central with the last gms in attendance.

~ what it was ~

the world was a stylized version of mega city, the metropolitan area glimpsed in revolutions. you played a redpill, picked one of three factions, and worked your way through the canonical post-trilogy plot. abilities were unlocked through a hyperjump style menu, with gun-fu animations cribbed from the films. you could load programs the way neo did. the look was right. the moment-to-moment combat was an interlock system that hardcore players defended and casual players bounced off.

~ the fall ~

matrix online launched into a world that already had wow. wow was easier to play and aggressively casual-friendly. matrix online was none of those things. its combat system asked you to predict the opponent's interlock branch in real time. its content updates leaned on chapter cinematics rather than dungeons or raids. for a 2005 mmo audience that wanted to grind dungeons with a guild, the wrong product had shipped under a very famous license.

the warner-to-sony hand-off three months after launch told everyone what the publisher thought of its future. soe minimized the team and let the population bleed out across merged servers. the canonical-sequel angle stayed strong inside the small remaining playerbase, but the game itself had stopped getting meaningful updates years before the actual shutdown.

~ the funny part ~

the matrix online is the part of matrix lore that most fans of the films do not know exists. people who watched the trilogy three times and then sat through resurrections in 2021 mostly never heard that the real continuation, the one with the wachowskis' blessing, was a dead mmo from 2005 with under five hundred players at the end. anything that happened after revolutions, in the wachowski-approved timeline, happened in a game that ran for fifty-two months and then went away.
