~ the obituary ~
working designs was an ntsc-region thing. i was on the wrong side of that import wall. the products it shipped were full english localizations of japanese rpgs on the [[sega-cd]] and the original playstation, sold through us retail at a premium price with glossy color manuals and foil-stamped boxes. none of that distribution chain reached turkey at any point in the 1990s.
victor ireland founded the company in 1986 in redding, california. it spent its first four years as a software company before pivoting to game publishing in 1990. the first big localization was cosmic fantasy 2 on the turbografx-cd in 1992. then came lunar: the silver star on the sega cd in 1993, which became the catalog anchor. for the next twelve years working designs was synonymous with the lunar series in english.
the differentiator was production quality. every release came with a color manual, sometimes with anime art commissioned specifically for the localization, and translator's notes that ended with the phrase we're nothing without you. the voice acting was recorded in english with american actors. jokes got rewritten for american sensibilities, and the box came with foil stamps that cost more than the competition charged for the cartridge itself.
the end came on 12 december 2005. victor ireland posted to the company's message board that complications around ps2 game approvals at sony america had created a revenue loss the company could not recover from. the upcoming release of growlanser generations had been the bet. working designs closed before it could fully pay off. ireland founded gaijinworks the next year and continued localizing rpgs at a smaller scale.

~ the climb ~
working designs landed at the right moment for cd-rom rpgs. sega cd was the first home console with enough storage for full voice acting. lunar: the silver star arrived in english in 1993 with redbook audio cutscenes and a manual that read like a fan publication. the localization model that working designs invented, where the english script took deliberate liberties for tone and humor while the production budget went toward the box and the disc, became the reference point for premium jrpg releases in north america for the rest of the decade.
the company moved with the format. when sega cd died, working designs shifted to sega saturn with magic knight rayearth and to the playstation with lunar: silver star story complete. the 1999 ps1 release of silver star story complete is the working designs catalog peak, a multi-disc set with a making-of disc and a hardcover manual that pushed the boxed-game format past where the platform holders had gone.
~ the actual end ~
the ps2 era was where the model broke. growlanser generations on the ps2 was the bet that was supposed to carry the company forward into the new console cycle. delays in the sony america approval process pushed the release window past the budget the company had planned around. by late 2005 the cash position would not support another release cycle. ireland posted the shutdown notice on 12 december 2005 on the company's own message board, before any press outlet had picked it up.
gaijinworks launched in 2006 as the successor. it ran on a smaller cost base, with fewer simultaneous projects and tighter localization budgets. it is still operational in 2026, mostly through limited physical runs and digital releases on the psn and the switch eshop.
~ the next chapter ~
the working designs model of premium-priced jrpg localization with elaborate packaging was the inverse of how the genre would actually grow online. by 2010 most jrpg fans were getting digital releases on psn at standard prices. by 2015 the localization business had consolidated into a few publishers releasing directly to digital storefronts. the working designs idea of a premium box with foil stamps and translator's notes did not survive the storefront era.
the lunar series ended up with multiple re-releases under other publishers after working designs closed, with the ds and psp ports landing through xseed and gaijinworks. the working designs editions are still the ones cult fans treat as the reference releases. listings for the original us boxes go for hundreds of dollars on resale sites in 2026. the foil stamps outlived the company that printed them.
