Aspiration

2013 - 2025
dead us
a los angeles neobank from 2013 that pitched itself as the climate-conscious alternative to wall street. the gimmick was tree planting and pay-what-you-want fees. the founder ran a $248 million fraud, got arrested in 2025, and the company filed bankruptcy a few weeks later.

~ the goodbye ~

i never opened a checking account in the us. aspiration was a us-only neobank for people who wanted their debit card to plant a tree. its whole pitch was domestic american: charity-aligned banking, leonardo dicaprio talking it up, robert downey jr in the cap table, drake getting equity. that crowd does not overlap with a computer engineer in ankara paying his bills through is bankasi.

aspiration was founded in 2013 in marina del rey by andrei cherny and joe sanberg. the model was a fee-free cash management account where customers picked their own monthly subscription (including zero) and a portion of card swipes went to tree planting. the marketing said "do well by doing good." the customer count grew past five million by the early 2020s, and the company raised more than 250 million dollars from celebrities and sustainability funds.

on march 31 2025 aspiration filed for chapter 11. the immediate trigger was the federal arrest of co-founder joe sanberg on wire fraud charges. by july the case had converted to chapter 7 liquidation. sanberg pleaded guilty and in 2026 was sentenced to 14 years for defrauding lenders and investors of about 248 million dollars.

~ the breakout ~

aspiration rode the 2010s ethical-consumption wave. mint had already taught people to view a banking app as a lifestyle product. simple had shown that a neobank ux could feel different from chase. aspiration grafted climate guilt onto that template. every card swipe rounded up to plant a tree. you could pay any monthly fee you wanted, including nothing. the brand had a quiet california moralism to it.

celebrities helped. dicaprio was an early investor and public face. drake came in 2021 with an equity grant. the la clippers wore the aspiration logo on their jerseys for the 2021 to 2022 season. for a fintech that never had a real banking charter (it ran on partner banks underneath), the surface gloss was unusually high.

~ the actual end ~

the fraud was deep. sanberg secretly paid businesses to enroll in the tree planting service so revenue numbers would look like growth. he overstated the company's assets to investors. court documents say he and a board member created fake bank statements to fraudulently obtain 145 million dollars in loans. it was not a startup losing money slowly, it was a founder cooking the books for years.

when the doj filed in march 2025 the company collapsed inside weeks. the bankruptcy filing wiped out investor equity. customers got their deposits back via the partner-bank relationships but every share dicaprio and drake held went to zero. by july the case was chapter 7 and aspiration was being sold for parts.

~ the next chapter ~

the trees question turned out to be the worst part. nobody can audit a tree planting program from the outside, and a chunk of the trees aspiration claimed to plant were either never planted or planted at fake sites that sanberg's network controlled. ten years of climate-conscious customer feel-good built on a partial fiction. that is the legacy aspiration left to the next round of ethical fintechs to live down.
