i did not play blades. by 2020 i was 36 with a full-time job in computer vision and a kid in the house. the elder scrolls games i had time for were the offline ones, mostly an occasional skyrim modlist tour over the holidays. mobile rpgs with timers and gem economies sat in a category i actively avoided. blades came up in news feeds at launch and at every patch since, and i would skim the coverage and move on.
bethesda announced blades at e3 2018 as a phone-first elder scrolls. it entered early access on ios and android in march 2019 and went 1.0 on may 12 2020. the nintendo switch port followed two days later on may 14. the game ran a first-person dungeon-crawl loop, a town-building meta-game that asked you to rebuild your destroyed home village, and a free-to-play economy with gem-gated chests and time-locked upgrades.
the commercial start was strong. blades cleared a million downloads in its first week and brought in roughly one and a half million dollars in ios revenue in its first month. that is real money for a mobile rpg launch and would normally signal a long live-service life. the critical reception did not match. the switch version landed at a metacritic 42, listed among the worst games of 2020 in several year-end roundups. critics called it a bland repetitive grind, the same review that lands on most timer-driven mobile games but stings worse when the brand is elder scrolls.
bethesda still kept the lights on for almost six years. blades got expansion content for the great houses, a co-op questing mode, and seasonal events through 2024. announcement of the shutdown came on march 28 2026 in a blog post saying the team needed to focus on starfield expansions and the elder scrolls vi. the in-app store closed first, the offline features stayed available until june 30 2026 when the servers were taken down for good.

~ what it actually was ~
blades was the elder scrolls reduced to its smallest viable loop. you walked down a corridor, hit enemies with a sword and a flame spell, looted a chest at the end, returned to town, spent the loot upgrading houses and unlocking more corridor templates. there was no open world, the dungeons were procedurally assembled from prefab chunks, and the town meta-system replaced the freeform exploration that defines the rest of the series.
the visual quality on a top-end phone in 2020 was genuinely impressive. id tech 5 ran credibly on apple silicon and recent qualcomm chips, the lighting did most of the heavy lifting, and the first-person combat felt close enough to skyrim's that brand fans had something to hold onto. the bottleneck was always the loop, not the engine.
~ how it ended ~
the march 28 2026 announcement said the game would not receive new content past that date. the in-app store closed on april 30. the offline mode and town features stayed up so you could keep playing what you had purchased. online services, including the arena, the co-op quests, leaderboards, and cloud saves, went dark on june 30 2026. the apps stayed in the stores as offline-only experiences after that.
bethesda confirmed there was no plan to refund recent purchases beyond what apple and google's stores already handled through their own policies. players who had bought into the gem economy in the last weeks were largely out of luck. anyone with a long save file lost their character progression beyond what the offline mode could read locally.
~ what it leaves behind ~
blades is now the second-shortest mainline elder scrolls product after the original redguard side game. it joins anthem, real racing 3, the sims mobile, and nba live 19 in the cluster of late 2025 and early 2026 live-service mobile shutdowns. the pattern across them is identical, a multi-year live build that was never quite a hit, kept on life support for the licensing window, then cut when the team needed somewhere else to put its attention.
the next elder scrolls game in development is still elder scrolls vi, originally announced at e3 2018 alongside blades. bethesda has confirmed it remains a long way out. blades will be remembered, if at all, as the placeholder that lived in the phone of anyone who could not wait.
