Brave Frontier
~ the eulogy ~
the shop was closed before most players had read the notice. gem purchases stopped at four in the morning eastern time on 30 march 2022, which was the same moment the global shutdown announcement went out. that ordering is the correct one and every gacha does it, because the alternative is a month of people buying currency for a game that will not exist. it still reads as a door being locked from the inside while the letter explaining why is still going out.
brave frontier was made by a-lim in tokyo and released on japanese ios on 3 july 2013. gumi picked it up for the rest of the world and shipped it on ios and android on 13 december that year, run out of gumi asia in singapore with gumi europe on the other side. the arrangement got strange enough that the game turned up in the made-in-singapore category of a local readers' choice award, and at least one publication stopped to ask how a japanese title had got there.
the game itself was a squad of five plus a borrowed unit from somebody on your friend list, fighting through stages by tapping. a brave burst gauge filled during a fight and emptied itself into a large attack. units that hit maximum level could be evolved, and the ones you did not want were fed to the ones you did. the whole economy above that was rare summons paid for in gems, and gems were the thing you could buy. nine years of content sat on top of that loop without ever replacing it.
none of this reached me. in 2013 i was twenty-nine and the phone in my pocket was for messaging, and the japanese gacha wave that swallowed a decade of mobile attention went past turkey without leaving much of a mark on anyone i knew. mobile gaming here became a real industry later and in a completely different shape, built on puzzle games for western app stores. the summoner-and-unit-collection register never had its turkish moment.

~ the origin ~
the growth curve was fast and it was global in a way japanese mobile games mostly were not at the time. twenty million downloads were reached in february 2015, eighteen months after the worldwide launch, and gumi ran an in-game celebration for it. the series total eventually reached thirty-eight million. the game spread onto kindle fire in 2014 and then onto windows and windows phone in july 2015, which was late enough that it is mostly a record of gumi trying every door.
the pitch was that it played like valkyrie profile, and the comparison held up better than most. what actually carried it was the friend-unit mechanic, which meant every stage had one borrowed character in it and gave players a reason to maintain a list of strangers. collection games live or die on whether you can see somebody else's collection.
~ the day it died ~
the japanese side went first and it went in bulk. on 31 january 2022 a-lim announced that all three of its brave frontier titles would close on 25 april. the original was joined on the way out by brave frontier 2 from 2018 and by brave frontier rexona, which had launched only the year before. account refunds ran until 30 june. that is an entire product line taken down on one date.
the global version followed two months behind on a separate notice. a-lim made the decision on 30 march 2022 and gumi shut the servers on 27 april, two months short of nine years from the japanese launch. no successor was offered to global players at the time and the shutdown page did not pretend otherwise.
~ what it became ~
brave frontier: the last summoner had already come out globally on 17 september 2018, built by gumi europe rather than by a-lim, and it did not inherit the audience. neither did brave frontier 2, which stayed in japan. the franchise spent its last four years splitting into versions that each held a fraction of the original.
in october 2025 gumi released brave frontier versus worldwide on ios and android, three and a half years after the servers went off. bringing a name back that far after the community has dispersed is a different act from keeping a game alive. what died in april 2022 was the save file and the specific units somebody had spent nine years evolving. no sequel gives those back.
