Megido 72

2017 - 2025

19:02 on a sunday in march 2025 is the minute dena printed in the notice and the minute the online service stopped. the game itself kept going. an offline build went up by noon the next day with everyone's save file on it, missing the features that needed a server and anything bought with paid gems. seven years and three months of one continuous story, only ever told in japanese. the app is still on the japanese app store at version 2.0.1 and nothing has touched it since 19 march 2025.

~ the obituary ~

Two minutes past seven in the evening, Sunday 9 March 2025. DeNA had printed 19:02 in the notice and the online service stopped at 19:02, odd minute and all. The game did not stop with it. An offline build went up by noon the following day with everybody's save file carried across.

メギド72 launched on 7 December 2017 for iOS and Android, free to play with item billing, and it belonged to DeNA outright instead of being licensed from an anime or a toy line. Media.Vision built it. The setting stacked a world of angels on top of the human one, with the demons living under both, and the plot was a scramble by a few boys to stop the end of everything.

Two of its decisions were strange for the form. Playable characters carried no rarity grade, and battles turned on managing a resource called photons rather than on whose numbers were biggest. In 2019 it took an Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards, and the Japanese press called it the first original smartphone title ever to take one.

The main quest closed in January 2025, seven years after it opened, with an epilogue published behind it. DeNA had announced the ending in late November 2024, so the game had three and a half months to finish tidily. It only ever shipped in Japan and in Japanese, so there is nothing honest to say here about having played it.

The migration came with homework. To have an offline game at all you had to run a bulk download inside the online app before 19:02 on 9 March, then update to the offline app, which DeNA said would be published by noon on 10 March. Miss the download and you were left holding an app with nothing in it.

Enough people missed it that version 2.0.1 arrived on 19 March with the bulk download reopened until 27 March. The offline build keeps the save data and loses every feature that needed a server, including anything that spent paid gems or a Solomon ticket. Unused paid currency was refundable through a form inside the app.

Dropping rarity was not a gesture. In a free phone RPG the rarity grade is the price tag, because a character is worth pulling mostly on the strength of the game having labeled it rare, and the pull is the business. This one sold you characters without the label and asked you to care instead about what each of them could do with a photon.

megido72.com answers nothing today. The Japanese App Store listing does: DeNA, メギド72, version 2.0.1, last published at 13:01 JST on 19 March 2025. That is nineteen months of total stillness on a store page that will still hand you the file. In 2026 a studio called Hello Freedom announced overseas screenings of video work from the game, which is the furthest the name has traveled in its life.
