~ the obituary ~
Hoshi no Dragon Quest launched in Japan on 15 October 2015, on iOS and Android, and its pitch was a map shaped like a planet. You could pinch the whole world of Bulria down to a marble or push in until you were standing in one town on its surface, and the exploration ran continuously between those two scales. Up to four players moved through it together. You could change a character's face and hair, dress them in whatever had dropped that month, and talk to strangers in stamps rather than sentences.
It found its audience immediately. Two million downloads by 19 October, four days after launch. Ten million by May 2016. Twenty-five million by October 2022, by which point the explorable area had grown off Bulria and out into a galaxy. For a decade this was one of the larger things Square Enix operated, and nearly all of it happened inside Japan.
There was an English service and it was brief. The global version opened on 25 February 2020, Square Enix announced its closure on 30 March 2021, and it ended at 23:59 UTC on 30 June that year at sixteen months old. Dragon Quest is the Square Enix series that stays home: the console entries reach the West late or not at all, and the phone games mostly never leave Japan. The Japanese version was the real one, and it outlived its own English translation by more than four years.

~ a star you could zoom into ~
The series tie was not cosmetic. The monster roster and the general shape of a Dragon Quest fight were both intact, and the game spent ten years writing its own story on top of them, built around a set of gods called the Maseishin. The producer changed at the seventh anniversary in 2022, and the brief handed to the new one was stated plainly: keep this place running, because the players treat it as somewhere they meet each other.
That is an unusual thing to find written down in a live-service postmortem, which normally reaches for engagement figures. Square Enix described the job as maintaining a venue, and then described failing at it.
~ why it got too big to run ~
The producer letter published on 25 August 2025 is specific about the cause, and the cause was the game itself. Ten years of additions had left a vast pile of skills and equipment, all of it interacting with everything else, and the program holding it had grown correspondingly dense. Every new release meant controlling more elements and balancing more interactions, and finishing that work without introducing a defect kept getting harder. The team said it had spent the whole decade on efficiency and had arrived at the point where it could not continue without players feeling the strain. Revenue is not mentioned anywhere in the notice.
~ the hour it shared ~
Square Enix announced two shutdowns on 25 August 2025. Dragon Quest of the Stars would end at 12:00 on 31 October, and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius would end at 12:00 on 31 October. Gem sales stopped at 16:00 that same afternoon. The two games had opened a week apart in October 2015, one on the fifteenth and one on the twenty-second, and they arrived at the same minute a decade later.
The final scenario event brought back bosses from across the ten years and finished the Maseishin story, which was the stated point of running to the anniversary instead of stopping in August. Search the Japanese App Store for it now and the query comes back empty.
