~ the eulogy ~
spotify stations never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was an australia-and-us-only experiment, released in january 2018 to the australian play store and app store, then expanded into the united states in early 2019. the app was a standalone radio client that lived next to the main spotify app and pulled from the same catalogue. it never left beta in four years of operation.
the pitch was lean-back listening for people who did not want to manage music. you opened the app, you saw a vertical list of stations, you tapped one, music started immediately. there was no search box, no library, no playlist builder. spotify framed it explicitly as a pandora-shaped product for a pandora-shaped behaviour: kitchen radio, drive-time, background work music, the listening tier where the user does not really care which track plays next as long as the texture is right.
spotify removed stations from the ios app store and google play on 6 may 2022 and shut the service down for all users on 16 may 2022. the four-month window between removal and shutdown was an export period where users could move their station list back to the main spotify app. the brand stations never officially graduated out of beta.

~ what it tried to do ~
the gap stations was aimed at was real. pandora had run on a specific listener behaviour for fifteen years in the us, the lean-back radio listener who does not want to pick songs but does want them to be at least relevant to a mood. spotify's main app had drifted toward search-first and playlist-first interfaces that did not serve that listener. stations was a parallel app that let spotify test whether the pandora user would move to spotify if you offered the right shape.
the answer was apparently no, or at least not enough. spotify never published install numbers for stations. the absence of a number is the answer. inside spotify the experiment was used to feed what eventually became the home-screen lean-back surface in the main app, where the modern smart shuffle and daily mix features were partly informed by what stations had taught the team.
~ what got buried ~
stations is now one of a few cleanly-dead spotify experiments alongside the spotify car thing hardware unit and the greenroom live audio app. all three were australia-or-us-first releases that spotify killed when the shape did not transfer. the brand was killed off without ceremony because by 2022 the spotify communication style around small experiments was already very quiet.
pandora itself, the shape stations was chasing, was acquired by siriusxm in 2019 and folded into the main siriusxm app over the following years. the standalone lean-back music app as a category did not survive into the 2020s anywhere. the work all moved into modes inside larger general-purpose music apps. stations is a small monument to the moment when that absorption finished.
