~ the obituary ~
kissanime sat in the part of the anime internet i can read about but did not personally live inside. by the late 2010s anime in turkey had legal options through crunchyroll and a few cable channels, and the people who used kissanime were either filling gaps the legal services would not licence, or were old enough to remember when no legal option existed at all. either way the site was the default fallback for almost a decade.
it launched around mid-2012 on a.ru domain. the catalog covered subbed and dubbed releases of nearly every show in print, plus older runs that no streaming service had picked up. by 2020 it was the most visited pirate site in the world by alexa rank and the largest single source of unlicensed anime online. nobody behind it was ever publicly identified.
on 14 august 2020 the operators posted a short notice that the site was closing. the announcement landed weeks before japan's revised copyright act took effect, an amendment that for the first time criminalized downloading of pirated manga and anime. the timing did not look accidental.

~ how it landed ~
kissanime was part of the kiss-family of sites, sister to kissmanga and kisscartoon. they shared infrastructure and a familiar layout: a search bar over a season grid, with a player that switched between whatever embeds had not yet been taken down. the player ran aggressive ads, and the catalog was deeper than any legal service.
for many viewers outside japan and the english-speaking core anime markets, this site was how a lot of canonical shows actually circulated. the legal options did not licence everywhere at the same time, and the languages that did get subs were not always the languages a given viewer needed.
~ what got buried with it ~
when kissanime went down, kissmanga went down the same day. years of community comment threads under each episode page vanished without an export. screenshots of those threads still surface in reddit posts as proof someone watched a specific show at a specific time, and as a record that the audience for it existed at scale.
~ what it became ~
clones using the kissanime brand appeared within weeks. none had the same catalog or the same uptime. the larger piracy ecosystem shifted toward a few aggregator sites that scraped multiple sources, with telegram and discord channels passing direct links on the side. the single-site browse experience kissanime offered did not really return. by 2026 the most-visited successors are not even brand-related, they just inherit the traffic that used to land on the kiss domains.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
