DiscordList.me

2017 - 2023
dead
discord shipped without a way to find anything on it, and for most of a decade that gap was filled by outsiders. discordlist.me was one of them, an ad-supported directory with a premium tier, built by a team whose own footer had to say they were not affiliated with discord. the goodbye letter went up at the end of july 2023 and gave users until 10 august. by november the domain was parked on park.io.

~ the obit ~

Discord launched in 2015 with an invite model and no directory. If you wanted to join a server you needed a link, and links circulated on Reddit or by word of mouth. That left a gap wide enough for an entire cottage industry of third-party server lists, and DiscordList.me was one of the larger ones.

It was a real site by June 2017, which is when the Internet Archive first captured it at around thirty kilobytes. You could browse and search servers or submit your own. There was a leaderboard and a Premium tier, plus an ads.txt file at the root, so the business ran on advertising with upgrades on top. The footer carried a sentence it was obliged to carry: the project existed to let people find and share communities and was not affiliated with Discord.

That last line is the whole precarious position of the category. These directories were load-bearing infrastructure for a platform that had never asked for them and could replace them the moment it felt like shipping its own discovery surface.

The goodbye letter was already on the site by 31 July 2023 at the URL /good-bye, with a banner on the homepage reading "Service is closing August 10th 2023. Thank you for the great journey!" The letter thanks users for their trust and tells them the browsing and searching features would stop working on 10 August. It points them at other platforms still doing the same job and signs off "Until we meet again". It never says why.

~ an old problem in new clothes ~

I have been online since 1998, and the shape of this is completely familiar from the other end of that span. The early web had the same hole and filled it the same way, with hand-maintained directories and web rings pointing at things no search engine had indexed yet. Somebody built the index the platform forgot, and then sold ads against it.

What changed by 2017 is who holds the leverage. A nineties link directory competed against other directories. A Discord server list competed against Discord itself, which owned the invite links and the client everybody was already running.

~ what the goodbye actually said ~

It is worth quoting at a little length, because it is the only statement that exists. "Thank you for being a part of our community and using our platform to discover and promote Discord servers. It has been a pleasure to be your guide in finding new communities, interests, and adventures." Then: "However, with deep regret, we must inform you that DiscordList.me will be closing its doors on August 10, 2023."

The sign-off does something you rarely see from a dying service. It tells people to go use a competitor: "There are still many other platforms, communities, and services out there that offer similar opportunities." There was no acquisition and no migration tool, just a date and a recommendation to look elsewhere.

~ park.io ~

The archive dates the switch-off neatly. The site was serving its normal ten to twelve kilobyte front page as late as 2 August 2023. Its ads.txt answered 200 on 25 July and had become a 301 by 15 August, which is roughly the moment the ad business stopped. By 17 November 2023 discordlist.me returned 1,139 bytes reading "a really cool domain parked on Park.io", with an invitation to get in touch about buying it.

Today a request to discordlist.me redirects to a ww80 subdomain of itself carrying a tracking parameter, the standard furniture of a parked name earning out its residual traffic. Discord meanwhile shipped its own Discovery tab and server search, and the dozens of independent lists that had covered for it spent the next few years closing one at a time.
