in 2011 two of the pirate bay founders decided to prove they could run a legal file-hosting site. gottfrid svartholm and fredrik neij put their names on bayfiles and hired dmca agents. the terms of service explicitly banned copyrighted uploads. it was the pirate bay pitched as an ordinary business, which was the whole point of the joke.
the site ran for three years without much drama. by the time fredrik neij was arrested in thailand in november 2014 for pirate bay charges, bayfiles was already in trouble as a business, and it went offline that month. it stayed offline for nearly four years. in july 2018 the domain came back online under different operators (never publicly named) as a rebranded frontend for anonfiles, the belgian-registered file-hosting service that had been running since 2017.
the second life of bayfiles was quieter than the first. it did not carry the pirate bay branding at the ownership layer, and the operators kept a low profile. what it did carry was anonfiles' business model, which was upload-and-share with minimal moderation. that model held up through covid and into 2022, when the moderation load from phishing kits and malware distribution stopped being manageable.
i was not on bayfiles. my file-sharing habit peaked with edonkey and later rapidshare in the mid-2000s, and by the time bayfiles opened i was mostly using gdrive and dropbox for file transfer. bayfiles belonged to the tail of the file-locker era i had already moved on from.

~ how it landed ~
the pitch in 2011 was straightforward: no registration required, and a promise to obey takedown requests. the file size cap was 250 mb, generous for the era. the technical stack was simple and the branding was the story. "a pirate bay file host that obeys the law" was a joke tech press wrote itself. filesonic and megaupload were still the giants of the category, and bayfiles never came close to their traffic.
~ the day it died ~
anonfiles shut down in august 2023, saying the moderation load from illegal content had become impossible for the small team to keep up with. bayfiles went dark at the same moment because it was technically running on the same backend. the domain became a parking page. there was no attempt to hand off users to a successor.
the shutdown fit a broader 2022-2024 pattern of second-tier file lockers giving up as the ratio of legitimate to abusive uploads got worse. anonfiles and bayfiles were joined that year by sendspace tightening rules and mediafire adding more scanning. the tail of "just upload and share" free hosts kept winding down.
~ what it became ~
nothing. the pirate bay founders had already been legally destroyed by 2014, and nobody with any name recognition took another swing at the "legal file locker with plausible deniability" market. what bayfiles specifically demonstrated was that even a serious attempt to run a compliant file host, with dmca agents and takedown machinery, could still get abused into oblivion by users who did not care about any of that. the follow-up hosts that survived (google drive and dropbox mostly) all made moderation the platform's core rather than a service department.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
