FileSonic

2010 - 2012
dead
a top-ten cyberlocker that pulled its own teeth on 22 january 2012, the weekend the megaupload founders got arrested in new zealand. users could still pull their own files, nobody could share links anymore. the husk drifted through to a full shutdown by september. one of the cleanest dominoes the megaupload prosecution knocked over.

~ the obit ~

filesonic's peak years overlap the years i was downloading mp3 rar archives off forum threads, but the boards i used linked to zippyshare and rapidshare more than to filesonic. the brand still mattered in the same shape my regulars did. forum post says "part 1 link, part 2 link, part 3 link," you click, you get a cyberlocker page with a wait timer and a captcha, you save the rar, you rejoin the parts with a tool, you have the album. filesonic was on the other side of that captcha for a couple of years.

the service launched on 4 august 2010 with an announcement on webmaster forums by a company representative under the handle "hish." the operators were never publicly identified by name, only as an entity with bases in the united kingdom and hong kong. inside eighteen months filesonic had cracked the top ten of file-share sites worldwide, with around 250 million monthly page views and adoption on more than half of corporate networks tracked by palo alto. then megaupload's founders got arrested in new zealand on 19 january 2012.

filesonic read the indictment, with its four billion dollars in conspiracy charges, and disabled sharing on its own platform the next weekend. the site stayed online. uploads still worked. you could still retrieve your own files. the link-sharing feature that made the platform a piracy waypoint was gone. the wikipedia summary covers the rest in a sentence: the changes enacted in the wake of the megaupload scandal resulted in filesonic going out of business by september.

~ the kill switch ~

the language on the site after the change was carefully boring. "all sharing functionality on filesonic is now disabled. our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally." no statement on why, no link to a news article, no acknowledgment of megaupload. an internal kill switch flipped without a press release.

the affiliates rewards program got pulled at the same time. money already earned by uploaders did not get paid out. that part went over badly inside the warez forums that had been the platform's distribution layer. uploaders who had been paid per ten-thousand-downloads on shared links found their balance frozen and their accounts repurposed as personal storage they did not want.

~ the megaupload domino ~

the megaupload raid was the event of the cyberlocker era. its aftershocks killed the rest of the category within months. fileserve and uploaded.to retired affiliate programs the same week. wupload pulled its entire service days later. hotfile killed sharing later in 2012 and shut down for good in 2013 after a lawsuit. rapidshare lost its userbase to slower terms and shut its servers in 2015. filesonic was the first big domino to go, two days after the megaupload arrests, and the speed of that decision tells you what the operators thought their legal exposure looked like.

~ the long quiet ~

by september 2012 filesonic.com no longer resolved. there was no farewell screen, no auto-redirect to a successor service, no announcement post. infosecurity magazine ran a short piece in early september noting the site had simply gone dark. the brand never reappeared. the operators never gave interviews. whatever they took with them off the books they took quietly.

paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
