Zippyshare

2006 - 2023
dead europe
zippyshare was the polish-run cyberlocker that lived from 2006 to 2023. forty-five million monthly visits at its peak. the blue download button at the bottom of a forum thread carried mp3 albums and software cracks across seventeen years. killed by ad blockers cutting revenue to near zero and the 2022 european electricity price spike that made the racks unaffordable to run.

~ the eulogy ~

zippyshare announced on 16 march 2023 that it would shut down at the end of the month. the wind-down post was bleak: ad blockers had killed the revenue side, and the cost of electricity through 2022 had risen something like 2.5x across europe. continuing to run the racks would have meant losing money on every download. the site went read-only and then dark on 31 march 2023. seventeen years.

the site launched in 2006 in poland, with a brutally simple page. you got a short link to share, no signup. the blue 'download now' button on a plain-html page became one of the most recognizable file-sharing visual signatures of the late 2000s and 2010s. at peak the site served somewhere around 45 million visits a month, mostly traffic referred from forums and music blogs.

the actual file payload was the cyberlocker payload. albums leaked the morning a record dropped, often before the official streaming release. fl studio cracks and vst archives moved through it too. so did game isos split across twenty rar parts and ebook scans the size of a small library. zippyshare was infrastructure for the long tail of unauthorized distribution, with a thin layer of legitimate large-file passing on top.

i used zippyshare. anyone in turkey looking for an mp3 album link in a forum thread between roughly 2008 and 2018 hit zippyshare at some point. the blue download button was a kind of muscle memory by 2010. the ttnet line at home was finally fast enough to pull a 70 mb album rar file in under a minute, and zippyshare was usually the host the rar landed on. by the time the shutdown notice went up, the whole infrastructure was already eroding, but the notice itself was still a surprise.

~ how it landed ~

zippyshare did the file-sharing host job better than its competitors because it stayed out of your way. the upload-to-link cycle was a couple of clicks, no signup. on the download side you clicked through one short ad page and got the blue button. no captchas worth complaining about for most of its run. no wait timers as ugly as the rapidshare free tier ever had. that lightness was the moat for a long time.

~ what killed it ~

the death note read like an accounting summary. ad blockers had been a slow leak in revenue since around 2018. the electricity bill was a 2022 step function. zippyshare had been ad-supported its entire life, with no premium tier to subsidize the basic service. once the ratio of paying ad impressions to served gigabytes inverted, the math stopped working. the 2022 european energy crisis took whatever margin was left.

~ what got buried with it ~

a lot of the music collection of the last seventeen years lived on as zippyshare links inside forum threads. when the site went dark on 31 march 2023, every one of those threads went brown at the same moment. the wayback machine had captured the page templates but could not preserve the file payloads. tens of millions of files dropped offline in a single weekend, mostly without anyone keeping a mirror. the cyberlocker era's archival problem was never that too much was saved. it was that almost nothing was.
