~ the obituary ~
putlocker was already running when megaupload went down. january 2012 took the biggest cyberlocker offline overnight, and the traffic did not vanish, it scattered. a lot of it landed on indexes like this one: a plain page of links that let you watch a film in a browser tab without downloading anything first. by then i was years past the internet cafe era and on a ttnet line at home in ankara, and streaming something off a random host was just a thing the web could do.
the trick was that putlocker never held the files. it pointed at the hosts that did, which is why it climbed to a top-250 ranking worldwide without ever running a real content library. that same trick made it almost impossible to kill cleanly. you could seize a domain and the index would surface again on a new one a week later, aimed at the same swarm of file-hosts.
the law caught up in stages. police had seized the putlocker.bz domain as far back as 2014. a uk high court blocked the site in may 2016, and by early october the original host had simply gone inaccessible. after that the name became a franchise nobody owned. fifty-odd mirrors carried the putlocker branding into 2017 and beyond, none of them clearly the real thing, all of them one court order from the next reincarnation.

~ the trick that made it slippery ~
the whole design was a legal dodge. hosting a pirated film gets you sued or raided. linking to a film someone else is hosting is a grayer crime, and one that survives the takedown of any single link. putlocker was a directory, not a warehouse, so killing it meant killing an idea rather than a server.
~ the afterlife ~
what makes putlocker strange is that it never really died, it just stopped being one thing. by 2017 there were mirrors and copycats using the name, and no way for a normal person to tell which tab was the descendant and which was a phishing trap wearing the logo. the brand outlived the site. that is its own kind of death, the kind where the tombstone keeps getting repainted by strangers.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
