Your News Update

2019 - 2021

two years and a fortnight is what google gave it. your news update arrived in november 2019 as the assistant's attempt at a bulletin that assembled itself, running short clips from different newsrooms in an order worked out from what google already knew you read. it never left english and it never left the united states. on 5 november 2021 the option stopped appearing in settings and google called the removal streamlining.

In 2019 I was an engineer in Ankara working on vision models, and a smart speaker on an American kitchen counter was a product category I read about rather than owned. Google Assistant had spoken Turkish for years by then, but not for this. Your News Update was English and it was the United States, start to finish.

It launched on 19 November 2019. The pitch was a bulletin that assembled itself: you asked for the news, and instead of one broadcaster's five-minute rundown you got a run of short segments from several newsrooms, sequenced out of what Google already had on you. Your location fed it, and so did whatever Discover had worked out about what you actually read.

Publishers had to opt in and record for it, which is the part that explains the geography. A bulletin built from partner audio only works in a country where enough newsrooms have signed the paperwork, and the paperwork only ever got done in one.

~ the pitch ~

Google was trying to make an audio version of Discover. Discover worked because the ranking never had to explain itself: it put a card in front of you and you either tapped it or you did not, and the feedback loop closed in a second. Audio does not give you that. A clip you dislike still plays to the end, and skipping is a deliberate act with your hands full.

The format also sat in an awkward place commercially. Publishers were handing Google short segments of original audio in exchange for a slice of attention they could not measure well, at a moment when the same publishers were building their own daily podcasts and were very clear about who owned those.

~ the day it died ~

On 5 November 2021 the toggle disappeared from Assistant settings and the entry disappeared from the Explore tab in Google Podcasts, where it had lived since September 2020. 9to5Google asked Google what had happened and got one sentence back: "We're streamlining our audio news products to improve users' experience." Anybody who wanted audio news was pointed at News Briefings, the fixed hand-ordered format Your News Update had been built to improve on.

Two years is not a short life for a feature inside the Assistant. It is a short life for the idea underneath it, which was that a machine could be trusted to order the news for one specific person, and that idea went back into the drawer for a while.
