Guilded

2017 - 2025

guilded launched on march 17 2017 from eli brown's pitch as the gaming-clan chat platform discord did not want to be. premium tier features were free from day one. 1080p 60fps streaming at 256 kbps audio, with kanban boards and tournament brackets layered on top of the chat client. competitive esports clans were the audience that took it seriously. roblox acquired the company on august 16 2021 for $90 million. the may 31 2024 announcement that all guilded users had to link a roblox account or lose access pushed non-roblox communities out in waves. roblox confirmed the shutdown on september 29 2025 and turned off the lights on december 19 2025.

~ the eulogy ~

i missed guilded entirely. the discord alternative slot in my life never opened up because discord itself was enough for the small handful of servers i sat in, mostly a couple of regional engineering chats and an old college group. guilded's pitch was for clan leaders and esports organizers who needed scheduling and bracket tools on top of voice, a use case i did not have. by 2017 i was thirty-three and not building a competitive gaming community for the first time in my life.

eli brown founded guilded in 2017 after stints at facebook and xbox. the company shipped a 1.0 release on march 17 of that year, with the core product positioned as a chat-and-voice client that pulled in every premium discord feature without the nitro paywall. 1080p screen sharing at 60 frames per second and 256 kbps voice quality were the headline specs, with team-management tooling like tournament brackets and kanban boards layered on top. the working theory was that competitive gaming communities cared about those tools enough to switch.

the switch never happened at scale. discord kept iterating fast enough that the feature gap stayed manageable, network effects locked most users in place. guilded built a small but committed following inside competitive overwatch and valorant scenes through 2019 and 2020. enough traction to interest acquirers but not enough to threaten discord's position. roblox bought the company on august 16 2021 for $90 million, the pitch being that roblox needed an in-house communications layer for its own developer and player communities.

~ what it was ~

the product itself was unusually good for an indie effort against a venture-backed incumbent. guilded shipped features faster than discord for the first eighteen months after launch, especially around team management. you could schedule a match and set up a bracket without leaving the client. the voice quality was higher by spec and the file-size limit was larger. the channel types covered more cases too. the price was zero.

what guilded did not have was the trojan-horse install base. discord's spread through league of legends communities in 2015 and 2016 had built up a default-install pattern that was very hard to dislodge once your friend group already had accounts and history there. switching cost compounded by the year, and by the time guilded was technically competitive the conversation about leaving discord was a hypothetical rather than a real decision.

~ the unraveling ~

the roblox acquisition was the part where the strategy got confusing. roblox is a kids platform at its core, with the average user well under guilded's 13-plus minimum age. tying guilded's product roadmap to roblox's compliance constraints meant non-roblox communities started getting product changes they had not asked for. on may 31 2024 roblox announced that all guilded users had to link a roblox account to keep using the platform. non-gaming communities and adult gaming clans started leaving the same week.

the migration was not to discord exclusively. matrix instances picked up some and revolt picked up some. a fair number went back to in-game chat or moved to private telegram supergroups. the exodus was visible enough that roblox started writing public messages explaining the long-term plan for guilded by mid-2024. the long-term plan turned out to be a sunset. the september 29 2025 announcement confirmed december 19 as the final date.

~ what got buried with it ~

roblox provided a content export tool in the months before the shutdown so server owners could pull their message history before the lights went off. some communities reconstituted on matrix or discord with the exported logs as starting context. most just folded, because the cost of moving an active community without losing the long tail of inactive members is generally higher than people estimate.

the broader takeaway from guilded's run is that the chat-app monopoly is sticky in ways the gaming-community press did not fully appreciate at the time. discord did not win because its product was better. discord won because it was the first one your friend group adopted, and the social cost of leaving compounds. guilded built a technically superior product for years and still ended up as a $90 million acqui-hire that got dismantled four years after the deal closed.
