Chimeraland

2022 - 2024

tencent's level infinite published chimeraland globally on 15 july 2022, an open-world survival mmo of eastern mythology by pixel soft. the game launched on steam plus android and ios, drew a rocky reception, stopped receiving updates in september 2023, and shut down its global servers on 30 march 2024. the china version outlived it briefly on separate hosting.

~ the obit ~

chimeraland sat in the pandemic-era mmo wave i can read about but did not personally play. i was in ankara doing edge ai for uav computer vision. tencent's open-world sandbox line was not my genre and their mobile-plus-pc release layer did not overlap my steam library much. anyway, the game shipped globally on 15 july 2022, and the whole thing was gone twenty months later.

pixel soft was the internal chinese studio, level infinite the outward publishing arm tencent set up to run global releases from about 2021 onward. chimeraland's pitch was a seamless open world drawn from chinese mythology with sixteen playable races. the two hooks under that were pet-taming that let you combine captured species into new hybrids and building anywhere on the map without a claim system. it launched free-to-play on steam, android and ios on the same day.

i saw the launch coverage. massively overpowered wrote it up as a rocky debut with performance complaints in july 2022, and the game never really shook that reputation off. by september 2023 pixel soft had stopped patching. no updates from that point on. the wind-down was so quiet that when the january 2024 shutdown notice went up on the official site, players noticed less because they had already noticed the silence.

~ what it actually was ~

this happened more inside the chinese and korean mmo layer than where i was. chimeraland's world sat on a spherical map with no loading screens, split across four continents. players picked a race from a roster of sixteen, humans and cats on the mundane end of the spectrum with bear-people and a dozen other options on the mythological end. gathering resources and planting crops sat under the base-building loop. capturing creatures pulled from the shanhaijing bestiary was the parallel loop that made the game distinctive. you could combine two captured beasts into a hybrid and ride it, which was the piece of the pitch marketing kept coming back to.

the monetization was mobile-gacha shaped even though it ran on steam. cosmetics for the character plus cosmetics for the pets and mounts on top. that is not the mix that pulls a steam pc audience easily. the western press coverage kept calling it a survivalbox to describe the shape but the mechanical spine underneath was tencent's mobile mmo playbook translated one country over. really though. the mismatch between the presentation and the monetization was there at launch and never got resolved.

~ the day it died ~

pixel soft posted the shutdown on 31 january 2024. new account registration closed the same day. in-game purchases went off shortly after. but the wind-down window was two months long, one of those farewell periods where every event runs at maximum drop rates and the login-day tracker resets so anyone can pick anything up they missed.

the global servers closed at 9pm on 30 march 2024. the china servers ran on a separate build for a while longer before quietly winding down too. tencent gave no public reason for the shutdown, which is standard for a mobile-live-service kill inside a big publisher. no press release, no post-mortem, just the notice on the site and then dark.

~ the long tail ~

chimeraland belongs to a specific 2024 wave of live-service closures out of asia. [[nier-reincarnation]] and [[magia-record]] went the same way in april and july of that year, both japanese-ip mobile titles killed by the same revenue-below-floor pattern. [[ember-sword]] and the wagadu chronicles ran the other version, the pre-launch cancellation. chimeraland is closest to nier reincarnation in shape, a large publisher's live-service title given a quiet farewell and then archived without a client.

the hybrid-pet system is what people who played it still remember. mixing a tiger with a bird and riding the result across a spherical continent was a thing you could do in almost no other game in 2022. there is no offline mode, no private server community that i know of, no build kept alive by fans. the videos on youtube of players building sky bases and taming chimeras are the only place any of it exists in 2026.
