~ how it landed ~
rtfkt was a sneakerhead-meets-crypto thing. that scene never reached me at any depth. by december 2021 when nike bought rtfkt i was 37, working on edge ai for drones, and not collecting digital sneakers in any form. the nearest contact i had with nft culture was reading the cryptopunks coverage when it broke and concluding it was not the part of the internet i was on.
benoit pagotto co-founded rtfkt studios in january 2020 with two partners, steven vasilev and chris le. the team came out of game-engine art and sneaker culture. the pitch was digital fashion as an asset, not a screenshot. an early ar try-on filter let you point a phone at your foot and see virtual sneakers. the first big revenue moment came in february 2021 with a drop with the seventeen-year-old crypto artist fewocious. seven hundred digital pairs sold for around 3.1 million dollars in seven minutes.
nike acquired rtfkt on december 13, 2021. the price was not disclosed but the reporting put it in the hundreds of millions, against an alleged 700 million dollar valuation at peak. the timing was almost exactly the top of the broader nft market. cryptopunks and bored ape yacht club were both near their all-time-high floor prices that month. nike's pitch was that physical sneaker culture and digital collectibles would converge and rtfkt was the team that could bridge them.
rtfkt shipped under nike for about three years. clonex avatars (twenty thousand pfp characters in collaboration with the artist takashi murakami) dropped at the end of 2021, with cryptokicks ios shoes following on snapchat ar try-on. lifetime nft trading volume crossed 1.5 billion dollars at peak. then the market evaporated. opensea volume collapsed across 2022 and 2023. the nft floor of clonex sank with it.
on december 2, 2024 rtfkt posted on x that the project would wind down. nike's new ceo elliott hill, who had taken over a month earlier, was refocusing the company on physical product and sport. operations ceased at the end of january 2025. nike sold what was left of the rtfkt brand on december 17, 2025 to an undisclosed buyer. nothing in my own internet history puts me near this product, look, i learned its arc from hypebeast and the verge.

~ what it actually was ~
rtfkt operated at the intersection of communities that did not overlap perfectly: streetwear sneaker collectors on one side, crypto traders on the other, with video game cosmetic buyers nearby. the bet was that those audiences would converge into a single market for digital fashion. for about eighteen months between early 2021 and mid 2022 the bet looked correct. drops sold out in minutes. floor prices held. nike was not the only legacy brand exploring nft strategy in that window but rtfkt was the most credible vehicle on offer.
the product surface evolved fast. nft pfp avatars were the early hook, with ar sneaker try-on through snapchat and instagram filters following on. physical-digital pairings (a real shoe shipped with an nft twin) were the convergence pitch. each of these worked on its own customer base but together they never produced a sustainable revenue line outside the speculative cycle.
~ how nike folded it ~
elliott hill replaced john donahoe as nike ceo in october 2024. the brief from the board was to refocus the company on athletic performance after years of brand drift. rtfkt was a high-visibility piece of the donahoe era. winding it down was a signal as much as a budget decision. the announcement on december 2, 2024 framed the closure as a transition rather than a failure, with promises of an archive site and continued community access for clonex holders.
the wind-down ran through january 2025. mnlth x got a final drop titled blade. clonex holders kept their tokens but lost the active studio behind them. a year later, on december 17, 2025, nike confirmed it had sold the rtfkt brand to an undisclosed buyer in a transaction reported by business of fashion and the oregonian. the buyer has not surfaced publicly as of mid 2026.
~ the long tail ~
the legal tail is still running. a class action lawsuit filed in 2025 alleges nike misled buyers about the long-term commitment to rtfkt and the value of the nfts. the case is pending. cryptokick floor prices on opensea sit in the low double digits in eth as of mid 2026, well off peak. the secondary market has not died but it is no longer a market in any pricing sense.
the broader lesson is the one every web3 acquisition of the 2021 vintage delivered. nike paid peak-cycle valuation for a brand whose underlying market was a speculative wave. when the wave receded the brand had no recurring revenue model that did not depend on more waves arriving. rtfkt now sits next to foundation and async art as nft-era brands whose deaths confirm the same arc.
